Discussion | Banking under the Mattress: Financial Literacy and Unbanked New Yorkers

A new FDIC study finds that seven of every 20 New York households is “underbanked.” In most cases, these are low-income, minority, and single-parent households that either have no bank accounts or rely heavily on alternative financial services such as payday lenders and pawn shops. Such families can pay exorbitant fees and interest, are at greater risk of robbery, and often can’t borrow because they have no credit history. New York and other cities and states are experimenting with solutions, including low- or no-fee community banking services and financial literacy campaigns. What works? And what should government, nonprofits, and the banking sector do now? Panel includes Jonathan Mintz, commissioner of the New York City Department of Consumer Affairs, presenting new data on the underbanked in New York; Cathie Mahon, executive director of the NYC Office of Financial Empowerment; Deyanira Del Rio, associate director of the Neighborhood Economic Development Advocacy Project (NEDAP); Edward Kramer, executive vice president of Wolters Kluwer Financial Services; and Leslie Parrish, senior researcher at the Center for Responsible Lending. Dean Starkman, managing editor of the Columbia Journalism Review’s “The Audit,” moderates.

Performance | Gina Athena Ulysse' Because When God Is Too Busy: Haiti, Me and the World

Featuring Dr. Ulysse of Wesleyan University in performance and discussion. How did Haiti - the enfant terrible of the Americas - become the bête noire of the region? This dramatic monologue considers how the past occupies the present. Ulysse weaves spokenword and Vodou chants to reflect on childhood memories, social (in)justice, spirituality, and the dehumanization of Haitians. Ultimately, she offers critical musings on geopolitics from the perspective of a Haitian-American woman who is bent on loving Haiti, loving Vodou and herself despite the odds. Students will also participate in a panel discussion about Haiti and in a musical performance.

Opening Reception | Intersections: A Show of 3 Artists

This show brings together three disparate artists whose work represents an intersection of styles, media and concerns. Intersections is an annual exhibition that displays current artists from The Educational Alliance’s studios alongside work by emerging and established artists. Corey D’Augustine’s work examines the intersection of formalism and everyday life. Social and economic inequality is endemic and a function of social systems that consistently reward greed. For D’Augustine, art is a model for a personal withdrawal from these systems to maintain a positive influence on the people and environment around us. This model aims to erase preconceived distinctions in favor of the direct experience of materials and their formal qualities. Marsha Melnick’s recent paintings occupy a terrain that navigates between figuration and abstraction. In her response to the natural world, color, composition, gesture, and mark-making play supporting roles in the intuitively orchestrated development of her work. Real and invented landscape elements intertwine and provide a jumping-off point for the artist’s deeper exploration of imagery. Gar Wang’s wall sculptures reflect her passion for animals and a lifestyle closely entwined with nature. She works with silk, bamboo, hemp, as well as wool from rabbit, sheep, goat, dog, alpaca, and camel combining these soft materials with stainless steel, wood, metal and clay. By contrasting these raw materials she brings out their inherent characteristics as she explores their texture, form and light.

Workshop | Creative Workshop: To Be Continued (at the Point of Abandon)

This collaborative workshop will explore a particular point in the creative process that we have all likely encountered: the breaking point, the point of abandon. During each class, the unfinished project will serve as a point of departure as well as a point of contention. Each period will begin with a guest who will present one of his or her own abandoned endeavors, discussing initial goals and reasons for giving up. After this presentation the guest will leave the class, willingly handing over the incomplete project. The work then becomes the charge of the group, and together participants will continue this project however they see fit.
