Conference | The Scholar and Feminist Conference XXXV: Feminism and Climate Change

Already among the most vulnerable populations worldwide, women as well as other marginalized groups have been the most acutely affected by the instabilities propagated by climate change. Issues such as water scarcity, drought, and other environmental problems threaten the world's food supply, making it more difficult for disadvantaged groups to obtain the basic necessities of life. Keynote speakers will be Majora Carter, environmental justice activist and president of the Majora Carter Group, a "green" economic consulting firm; and Joni Seager, scholar and activist in feminist geography and global environmental policy, and Chair, Global Studies Department at Bentley University.

City Walk | Public Schools of CBJ Snyder: Bushwick to Greenpoint Walk

Around 10 miles, city streets. This walk looks at numerous public schools in Brooklyn designed by the architect Charles B. J. Snyder, Supt. of School Buildings from 1891 to 1923 during the glory days of public education. Replacing the factory/prison approach to education, his buildings embodied contemporary educational-reform concepts about light, fresh air, and playspace for children coming out of crowded tenements. He saw schools as civic monuments and neighborhood anchors. Zigzag in a westerly direction from Bushwick through Williamsburg, ending in Greenpoint. Bring or pick up a lunch. Many dropping-off points. Rain or inclement weather cancels.

Workshop | Creative Workshop: Play

This activity-based course engages with the concept of open-ended play and the imagination as a generative tool. It is based on the conviction that play is a necessary part of life and that we don’t do enough of it. We sacrifice play on a daily basis in pursuit of work and ambitions, stress, life maintenance. As such the course looks at the philosophies of Dewey, Pierce, Gardner, Waldorf, Amish forms of play, Steiner, et al. We’ll also look at the pedagogy of play and kinder-garden [“children’s garden”] where play and nature combine into learning. During class sessions, participants will engage in activities that question the role of play.
