Talk | Artist Talk with Tehching Hsieh

Hsieh was born in Taiwan in 1950. He dropped out of high school in 1967 and took up painting in 1969. After finishing his army service (1970–1973), he had a solo show and stopped painting shortly thereafter. In 1973, Hsieh did his first performance action, Jump Piece, in which he broke both ankles. Trained as a sailor as a means to enter the U.S. Hsieh arrived at the port of a small town in Philadelphia in July 1974. He jumped ship and stayed in the states as an illegal immigrant for 14 years until he was granted amnesty in 1988. From 1978 to 1999, Hsieh did five One Year Performances and a Thirteen Year Plan. Since 2000, released from the restriction of not showing work during the Thirteen Year Plan, Hsieh has lectured and exhibited his work at institutions worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art and the Guggenheim in New York in 2009. In 2008, Hsieh received a HOI fellows grant from the arts organization, United States Artists. Location:

Author Reading | Avi Steinberg discusses his book Running The Books: The Adventures of an Accidental Prison Librarian

The author will be in discussion with Nicholas Higgins, the Library Correctional Services Librarian, about his book, a trenchant exploration of prison culture and an entertaining tale of his attempt to find his place in the world while trying not to get fired in the process. It is a memoir of his job as a librarian in a tough Boston prison, where he attracts con men, minor prophets, ghosts, and an assortment of quirky regulars searching for the perfect book and a connection to the outside world. Over time, he is drawn into the accidental community of outcasts that has formed among his bookshelves — a drama he recounts with heartbreak and humor.

Author Reading | Adrian Tomine discusses his book Scenes from an Impending Marriage: A Prenuptial Memoir

This loose, cartoony departure from Tomine's previous work is a sweet-natured, laugh out-loud skewering of the modern marriage process, including hiring a DJ, location scouting, trips to the salon, suit fittings, dance lessons, registering for gifts, and managing familial demands. The most personal and autobiographical work of Tomine's career, Scenes from an Impending Marriage is a charming, delightful token of love.

Discussion | Hatch-Billops Archives: A Celebration of 30 Years of Documentation

The Hatch-Billops Collection Inc. began in 1975 while Camille Billops, an artist and filmmaker, and James Hatch, a theater historian, were teaching art and literature at the City College of New York. Reception follows. Moderator: James V. Hatch. Panelists: Camille Billops, visual artist and filmmaker; Robin Holder, painter, printmaker and public artist; Dorothy Thigpen, Executive Director, 3rd World Newsreel.

Lecture | Russian-Israeli Art: Then and Now

Over the past decade, a number of Israeli artists have entered the international gallery and museum scene in an unprecedented way. At the same time, a new caste of artists is making its name in Israel, where the local art establishment has itself grown in a way never before witnessed. And tottering between these global changes has been a combination of old-guard Soviet expatriates and new guard young Russian-speakers making their way through the wildly changing Israel of the 1990s. The difference between these two historical contexts is reflected in the works emerging from them, as are some of the cultural constants. These are explored in this talk by David Stromberg based on interviews and profiles of Israel's artists, their work, and the personalities behind their practice.
