After the Battle of Antietam, Col. Robert Gould Shaw is offered command of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, which is the United States' first all-African-American regiment. With the help of junior officer Cabot Forbes, Shaw puts together a strong and proud unit, including the escaped slave Trip and wise gravedigger John Rawlins. At the beginning, the regiment is limited to menial manual tasks, but they fight to be placed in the heat of battle.
