Book Discussion | On Shaky Ground: A Novel of 1920s Ukraine (in-person and online)

V. Domontovych’s novel, recently translated into English, is a modernist tale written in the late 1930s and early 1940s and was originally published in Nazi-occupied Kharkiv in 1942. One of the best examples of intellectual fiction of the time, the work summarizes the struggles of the Ukrainian intelligentsia in the late 1920s and early 1930s, when totalitarian reality, together with rampant industrialization, started to affect everyday life.

Book Discussion | Class and Inequality in China and India, 1950–2010

China and India have long been central to the world economy. Two and a half centuries ago, they contributed 50% of the world’s output; after suffering a decline thereafter, their share fell to a paltry 9% in 1950 but has since resurged to about 25% today. This book shows that the growth and inequality experiences of China and India have had strikingly similar trajectories, especially after 1980, despite their very different political and social institutions. It offers novel insights using a class lens to analyze and compare the Chinese and Indian inequality stories, locating them within the larger contexts of Asian and global capitalism. Author Vamsi Vakulabharanam demonstrates that the interconnectedness between Chinese and Indian growth and inequality dynamics and the transformation and evolution of global capitalism is key to understanding the within-country inequality dynamics in both countries. The book thus offers a new perspective on economic development and inequality that builds on and adds to the insights of Kuznets and Piketty.

Book Discussion | In Open Contempt: Confronting White Supremacy in Art and Public Space

Author Irvin Weathersby Jr. discusses his memoir. Amid the ongoing reckoning over America’s history of anti-Black racism, scores of monuments to slaveowners and Confederate soldiers still proudly dot the country’s landscape, while schools and street signs continue to bear the names of segregationists. With poignant, lyrical prose, cultural commentator Irvin Weathersby confronts the inescapable specter of white supremacy in our open spaces and contemplates what it means to bear witness to sites of lasting racial trauma.

Film | Rebel Without a Cause (1955) with James Dean

Troublemaker teen Jim Stark moves to a new town for a clean slate, but being the new kid creates its own set of problems. Jim falls for Judy, a girl in his new town, and forms a friendship with Plato, a disturbed classmate. But neighborhood bully Buzz is Judy's boyfriend, and when Buzz violently confronts Jim, challenging him to a drag race, Jim finds himself in a world of troubles. Director: Nicholas Ray Cast: Natalie Wood, James Dean, Sal Mineo, Jim Backus, Ann Doran, Corey Allen, Wiliam Hopper, Dennis Hopper James Dean was an American actor who is remembered as a cultural icon of teenage disillusionment and social estrangement, as shown in his most celebrated film, Rebel Without a Cause. The other two films that defined his stardom were East of Eden (1955) and Giant (1956). After his death in a car crash in 1955, Dean became the first actor to receive a posthumous Academy Award nomination for Best Actor for his role in East of Eden. Upon receiving a second nomination for his role in Giant the following year, Dean became the only actor to have had two posthumous acting nominations. In 1999, the American Film Institute ranked him the 18th best male movie star of Golden Age Hollywood in AFI's "100 Years...100 Stars" list.

Discussion | Five Classic Ballets Then and Now

Classic ballets from the 19th century may be household names, but what does their original history tell us about how they were first performed and what we can learn from the past that is useful for today's stagings? Marian Smith and Doug Fullington discuss long-forgotten aspects of some of the most well-known ballet classics with the dance writer Marina Harss. The two dance historians recently published Five Ballets from Paris and St. Petersburg, a book that provides an in-depth look at the earliest productions of Giselle, Paquita, Le Corsaire, La Bayadere, and Raymonda, including detailed accounts of choreography, mime, music, and action. These classic story ballets were intended to appeal to popular audiences--they were easy to follow, full of variety, and they dazzled with special effects and spectacle. But in the 20th century, many of them underwent radical changes. And more recently, serious discussions have arisen about cultural insensitivity and exoticization. What is still interesting about them today? By revealing in unprecedented detail what they were like when first created, Smith and Fullington explore the viability of a number of ballet classics that are commonly revived for today's audiences. Registration required.

Screening | 140 Years of Composer Alban Berg: Screening and Discussion

Celebrating the 140th anniversary of the birth of Austrian composer Alban Berg and come for a film-screening of Secret Song. 2025 marks the 140th anniversary of the birth of Alban Berg (1885-1935), a key figure in 20th-century music and a leading member of the Second Viennese School, founded by Arnold Schoenberg. Known for his groundbreaking work in blending atonality and serialism with a rich, emotional expressiveness, Berg's compositions continue to resonate with modern audiences. His operas Wozzeck and Lulu stand as masterpieces of modernist opera, while his Violin Concerto is celebrated for its poignant lyrical beauty. Secret Song tells the gripping true story behind a musical masterpiece: Alban Berg's Lyric Suite for string quartet has long been hailed as one of the cornerstones of 20th-century musical modernism. But for decades, few suspected that behind this powerful music lies an explosive secret. In 1925, Berg fell passionately in love with Hanna Fuchs-Robettin, a married woman living in Prague. Soon afterwards, Berg composed the Lyric Suite for string quartet, which he intended as an explicit musical portrayal of his love affair with Hanna. Berg explained the music's secret meaning in a color-coded copy of the score that he annotated for Hanna, making clear that the main events of their romance are vividly dramatized in the piece. But to the rest of the world -- including his wife, Helene -- Berg presented the piece as he wanted it to be seen: a purely abstract work of chamber music. Among the work's secrets is that its last movement was originally conceived as a song about doomed love, set to a poem by Baudelaire. Secret Song brings this tale to life as an innovative film narrative. At the heart of the film is a cinematic re-enactment of the love story hidden within the notes of the music, with the music itself as the soundtrack.

Book Discussion | I Lived to Tell the Story: A Memoir of Love, Legacy, and Resilience by Tamika D. Mallory

Activist Tamika D. Mallory discusses her new book I Lived to Tell the Story: A Memoir of Love, Legacy, and Resilience. In this candid memoir, a follow-up to her "masterful" (Marc Lamont Hill, New York Times bestselling author) response to the murders of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd, State of Emergency, Tamika D. Mallory holds nothing back as she shares hers, the activist's life. From early days as daughter to Black civil rights activists in Harlem, New York, to a young Black woman's first battles against the physical and political violence she'd fight all her life, to the never-before-shared personal and professional crises launched by those forces intent on keeping her silent, this is a work of activism in motion and an unflinching story of America at the turn of the 21st century.
