The Youngers are an African-American family living together in an apartment in Chicago. Following the death of their patriarch, they try to determine what to do with the substantial insurance payment they'll soon receive. Walter Lee wants to make a business investment, while his mother, Lena, wants to buy a house for them all to live in. Their two differing views of the American Dream come head to head. She received numerous accolades, including an Emmy Award and a Grammy Award, as well as a nomination for an Academy Award. She was honored with the National Medal of Arts in 1995, the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award in 2000, and the Kennedy Center Honors in 2004.
