Opening Reception | Mirror Paintings: Dzine's Born, Carlos Rolon, 1970

The show is a development of the artist’s deep engagement with the culture of self-fashioning and customization, or Kustom Kulture, and his dual identity as both American and Puerto Rican. The show presents shattered mirror paintings, lustrous mosaic monochromes where cut glass shapes are tiled with glitter, crystal, and rhinestone resin caulking - think costume jewelry, nail art, disco and diamonds meeting the architecture of high-rise Caribbean office buildings, Copacabana boardwalks and Gaudi facades.

Opening Reception | Il Quieto Nello Specchio - The Quiet in the Mirror: Works by David Alexander Del Boca Flinn

Having spent his life between New York and Turin, David Alexander Del Boca Flinn finds his epicenter in the duality between Nature and the moral infrastructures that our society forces upon our conduct. With a language referential of Arte Povera he finds as a formula a dialogue between industrial and natural materials, with often represented moments of conflict or unbalance between these two protagonists.

Screening | Poetics of Pedagogy in Revolution: Abbas Kiarostami’s First Case, Second Case (1979)

A screening and roundtable discussion. The film was made during a crucial revolutionary passage in Iran. This film was produced during the transition from Pahlavi monarchy to an Islamic republic, hence registering residual speeches that flow from one institutional space to the other. FIRST CASE, SECOND CASE builds upon an instructional cinematic staging and sociological case study of liberal pedagogy at high school level to a dizzying talking-head exchange of educational, political, artistic, religious, and judiciary expertise on the democratic fate of individual’s rights versus the sacrifice for a collective cause. 47 min. Panelists: Agnès Devictor (University of Paris 1, Panthéon-Sorbonne); Jean-Michel FRODON (Slate.fr, Sciences Po Paris, St. Andrews); Alisa Lebow (University of Sussex); Mohammad Salemy (University of British Columbia). Organized by Hadi Gharabaghi (New York University).

Screening | Safety First: Short Films

Government neglect, political obstructionism and lack of information combined to put people at risk for contracting AIDS in a myriad of ways. Gay men had to invent Safe Sex in order to protect themselves without giving up sexual freedom. Grassroots AIDS organizations had to find ways to do needle exchange in spite of the government’s willingness to allow people to die.
