Opening Reception | 3 Art Shows: Susan Hockaday / Lisa Fischetti / Anne McKeown

Susan Hockaday, After Nature: Photograms and Drawings - In an exhibit of photograms and drawings, Susan Hockaday uses trash to portray the impact of humans on the planet, which has led to disturbed patterns of nature. Fragments of debris are employed to create troubled, barren landscapes. Lisa Fischetti, About A Window - A careful dissection of a distinctive architectural interface. In a series of recent oil on wood panel paintings, the unifying compositional motif, is considered with clean, minimalist precision. At once intimate and objective, Lisa Fischetti's work articulates how various segments of the structure can serve to formally and allegorically alter our line of sight. Anne McKeown, Getting In Front of Flow - For nearly two decades, papermaking has been central to Anne McKeown's artistic practice. "Paper," she says "can assume many different identities." And it is her exploration of paper's plasticity: as a substrate for paint (and ink) as well as its delicacy and surprising durability as sculptural material, for which she's best known. But in this show, in addition to her signature paper work, she explores her long-term interest in creating artwork out of unconventional materials.

Author Reading | Eve Meltzer reads from her book Systems We Have Loved: Conceptual Art, Affect, and the Antihumanist Turn

In 1957, the French literary and cultural critic Roland Barthes famously interpreted the collective representations of his own culture as a “system” of signs that could be analyzed like a language. The association of Ferran Adrià’s work with the idea of language and systems, in nearly the same sense that Barthes intended, has been drawn time and again by the chef. Meltzer’s focus undoubtedly begs the question: is Adrià’s culinary vision a new twist on the decades-old structuralist mantra that “everything is structured like a language?”

Author Reading | Paul Bloom discusses his book Just Babies: The Origins of Good and Evil

Psychologists have long believed that we begin life as amoral animals. After all, isn’t it the role of society to transform babies from little psychopaths into civilized beings? The renowned psychologist and an internationally recognized expert on the psychology of language, social reasoning, morality and art argues that humans are in fact hardwired with a sense of morality. Join him for a fascinating discussion as he reveals that babies and toddlers can judge the goodness and badness of others’ actions; and that they feel guilt, shame, pride and righteous anger.

A New York City winter usually includes snow. It may look pretty while it's coming down, but enough of it at once can paralyze the largest urban area in North America. What does it take for New York's Department of Sanitation, the city agency in charge of snow response, to keep the streets clear when the white stuff falls? Join Robin Nagle, anthropologist-in-residence at the New York City Department of Sanitation, and author of the book Picking Up, for surprising stories about how snow has shaped life in the Big Apple. Discussion | Real Plums, Imaginary Cake: Truth in Narrative

Aria Beth Sloss (Autobiography of Us), Leanne Shapton (Swimming Studies) and Katie Kitamura (The Long Shot) discuss "truth" in narrative. By looking at the range of stories written by Sloss, Shapton, and Kitamura -- a novel about a mixed martial arts master, the autobiography of an artist told through stories from her past as a competitive swimmer, a failed love affair narrated via auction catalog, the story of two women coming of age in the 1960s -- we hope to examine the choices made by every author approaching a story he or she feels compelled to tell, and, through the process, to take a good look at the complicated issue of "truth" in narrative. Moderated by Thessaly La Force.

Slide Lecture | Rephotographing Marville’s Paris: A Study of Urban Change

Urban change is inevitable, as is our ambivalence towards modernization and the possible loss of heritage which accompanies it. During the second half of the nineteenth-century, Paris was reimagined and a structure of wide boulevards constructed to crisscross the network of older streets. It was Charles Marville’s task to document in photographs what Georges Haussmann slated for demolition. In this illustrated lecture, photographer Peter Sramek discusses his process of revisiting Marville’s sites to record the changes of the past 150 years and to speak with today’s Parisians about how the city continues to change in some of its oldest neighborhoods.
