Carolyn Dorfman Dance presents "PRIMA!" celebrating the 5-decade career and range of the inimitable Louis Prima. Through the use of full songs, including the iconic "Sing Sing Sing" and "Just A Gigolo/Ain't Got Nobody" and musical collage, Dorfman and her company explore the full, driving and buoyant sound of Louis Prima and his band. Dorfman, too, features the powerful, virtuosic and expressive voices of Prima's female lead singers, Gia Maione Prima and Keely Smith in such delights as "I Want You To Be My Baby," and "Undecided". It is the strength, nuance and playful, yet firm, dialogue and banter of these women with Prima, that inspires Dorfman most. Tour | Bloomingdale in 1940: A Tour of The Upper West Side Neighborhood Then and Now (virtual)

What a difference 80 years make! Take a virtual history tour of the Bloomingdale neighborhood and see how what was then became what is now, led by Julian Boilen, Gil Tauber and Jim Mackin. Between 1939 and 1941, the Works Progress Administration (WPA) collaborated with the NYC Tax Department in an effort to photograph every building in the five boroughs. This ambitious project yielded a trove of thousands of photos of most of the city's buildings, which, in 2018, were digitized and tagged by the NYC Municipal Archives. In 2019, the web developer, Julian Boilen, built an online map (https://1940s.nyc) that makes it possible for users to explore a city lost to time. Boilen's project is both the inspiration and the basis for the evening's program which has been constructed much like a tour.

Theater | JM Synge's The Aran Islands: 'a hypnotic performance' by One of Ireland’s Finest Actors (virtual)

In the grey, sea-battered landscape of the Aran Islands, full of mist and wild rain, hearth is home and storytellers regale with tales by the fire. When John Millington Synge traveled to these remote islands upon the advice of WB Yeats in 1898, he discovered a bleakly primitive, mystical land that would inspire him for the rest of his life, leading to canonical works in Irish theatre, including The Playboy of the Western World and Riders to the Sea. The Aran Islands is a haunting and visceral experience built around “a hypnotic performance” by Brendan Conroy, one of Ireland’s finest actors, as he captures the spirit of Synge in Joe O’Bryne’s theatrical adaptation of Synge’s early work, “The Aran Islands.” This play has been reimagined for digital presentation, transporting audiences to a distant world.
