Theater | JM Synge's The Aran Islands: 'a hypnotic performance' by One of Ireland’s Finest Actors (virtual)

In the grey, sea-battered landscape of the Aran Islands, full of mist and wild rain, hearth is home and storytellers regale with tales by the fire. When John Millington Synge traveled to these remote islands upon the advice of WB Yeats in 1898, he discovered a bleakly primitive, mystical land that would inspire him for the rest of his life, leading to canonical works in Irish theatre, including The Playboy of the Western World and Riders to the Sea. The Aran Islands is a haunting and visceral experience built around “a hypnotic performance” by Brendan Conroy, one of Ireland’s finest actors, as he captures the spirit of Synge in Joe O’Bryne’s theatrical adaptation of Synge’s early work, “The Aran Islands.” This play has been reimagined for digital presentation, transporting audiences to a distant world.

Slide Lecture | Workplace in NYC 1910s - Present: Tenements, Factories and Unions (virtual)

On the 110th anniversary of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire, learn about the tragedy's lasting impact, and the women who worked in New York's garment industry and how they affected change. How does work shape who we are and how do we shape where we work? This tour looks at two families, the Rogarshevskys and the Wongs, who earned a living in the garment industry in the 20th Century. The Rogarshevsky teenagers worked in factories during the height of the workers' rights movement in the 1910s, and Mrs. Wong was one of thousands of Chinese immigrant women who supported their families making clothes in the 1970s and 80s. How did they enter the industry? What role did garment work and labor unions play in their lives, and what lessons can we learn from their stories?

Classical Music | Sacred Choral Music and Baroque Violin Sonatas (virtual)

Choir of St. Luke in the Fields, Leah Gale Nelson, violin in scordatura, Daniel Swenberg, theorbo, and Dongsok Shin, chamber organ, perform H.I.F. Biber's Rosary Sonatas and Tomas Luis de Victoria's Lamentations of Jeremiah. About the Program Heinrich Ignaz Franz von Biber (1664-1704), a preeminent violin virtuoso of the 17th-century and Kapellmeister at Salzburg, left a body of extraordinary works for the violin. Preceding J.S. Bach by a generation, Biber's writing is striking in its complexity and virtuosic demands, stretching the limits of the instrument. His Rosary Sonatas (also called Mystery Sonatas) are especially notable not only for the virtuosic writing, but each sonata also requires a re-tuning of the instrument, called scordatura, providing each with a distinctive character and sonority Tomas Luis de Victoria's (1548-1611) settings of the Lamentations of Jeremiah contain some of his most intense, mystical and moving music and rank alongside the Requiem as one of his greatest achievements.
