The addition of wild mushrooms will provide a gourmet side dish. You could find gourmet enoki mushrooms, tree ears, or oyster mushrooms. There might even be an abundance of mica caps. Burdock root is great from early spring through fall, and the new leaves will show you where to dig up this Eurasian invasive relative of the artichoke. Theater | JM Synge's The Aran Islands: 'a hypnotic performance' by One of Ireland’s Finest Actors (virtual)

In the grey, sea-battered landscape of the Aran Islands, full of mist and wild rain, hearth is home and storytellers regale with tales by the fire. When John Millington Synge traveled to these remote islands upon the advice of WB Yeats in 1898, he discovered a bleakly primitive, mystical land that would inspire him for the rest of his life, leading to canonical works in Irish theatre, including The Playboy of the Western World and Riders to the Sea. The Aran Islands is a haunting and visceral experience built around “a hypnotic performance” by Brendan Conroy, one of Ireland’s finest actors, as he captures the spirit of Synge in Joe O’Bryne’s theatrical adaptation of Synge’s early work, “The Aran Islands.” This play has been reimagined for digital presentation, transporting audiences to a distant world.

Theater | Franz Kafka's Letter to My Father (virtual)

In 1919, an ailing Franz Kafka wrote a letter to his father. In it he put his anger, his fear, his guilt, his loneliness, his ingratitude, his debt, his despair, his joy, his pride, his confusion, his laughter, his hate, his memory, his shame, his tears, his disgust at everything his father represented and his profound hope that he might one day measure up to such a remarkable man. The letter never reached its destination. Now, live from quarantine, you are invited to a curious event — part YouTube meltdown, part hidden-camera show, part seance — as M-34 Productions attempts to deliver it at last. Directed by James Rutherford, and performed by Michael Guagno.

Opera | Met Opera: Wagner's Der Fliegende Hollander from March, 2020 (virtual, streaming for 23 hrs)

In March 2020, the Met made the difficult choice to cancel the remainder of the 2019-20 season in an effort to keep audiences, performers, and staff members safe from the COVID-19 pandemic. The decision also meant ending the Live in HD season early, only days before a scheduled transmission of Francois Girard's stirring new production of Der Fliegende Hollander. Fortunately, as part of regular preparations for an HD broadcast, a prior performance of the opera was recorded as a camera rehearsal. In this high-definition "scratch taping," celebrated conductor Valery Gergiev is on the podium for Wagner's breakout operatic masterpiece, an eerie ghost story about the otherworldly Flying Dutchman. Having already sung a number of the composer's works at the Met, bass-baritone Evgeny Nikitin delivers a commanding performance in the title role, opposite soprano Anja Kampe in her debut season as Senta. The thrilling cast also stars tenor Sergey Skorokhodov as Erik, bass Franz-Josef Selig as Daland, mezzo-soprano Mihoko Fujimura as Mary, and tenor David Portillo as the Steersman.
