Author Reading | Barbara Garson reads from her book Down the Up Escalator: How the 99% Live in the Great Recession

In her latest book, Barbara Garson shows us the real human cost of our economic follies. In praise of her book, George Packer of the New Yorker described her as "an appealing voice: wry, modest, realistic. She's like a sympathetic but slightly critical friend, ready with a hug and unable not to give advice." Her most famous work, MacBird!, a 1966 counterculture political parody of Macbeth was a runaway hit and one of the most controversial plays of the 1960s. Her many awards include an OBIE, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and a MacArthur Foundation Grant.

Tour | Greenwich Village Tour

Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all.

Symposium | Ingeborg Bachmann: one of the most influential postwar writers in the German language

Bachmann’s Borders: A Commemorative Symposium October 17, 2013, marked the 40th anniversary of the Austrian author Ingeborg Bachmann’s untimely death in 1973 at the age of 47. During her lifetime, Bachmann, born in 1926, was already widely regarded as one of the most influential postwar writers in the German language. She catapulted to early fame when the leading German news magazine Der Spiegel featured her on its cover in 1954, hailing her poetry as a “stenograph of its time.” Today, the Ingeborg Bachmann Prize—among the most prestigious awards for Germanophone writers—marks Bachmann’s continued importance in the contemporary literary landscape.

Opening Reception | Reinhard Mucha's Hidden Tracks, Recent Work by the German Artist

The exhibition, the artist’s first solo show in New York in thirteen years, continues to reveal Mucha as one of the most significant artists of his generation. Throughout Mucha’s artistic production of the past four decades run themes of collective identity, memory, nationalism, the psychology of architecture and power, the museum as the locus for the creation of history, and the merging of industrial, historical and political landscapes. His complex work penetrates several dualities: connectivity and isolation, temporality and permanence, intimate narrative and national history, progress and stasis.

Film | D.A. Pennebaker & Chris Hegedus' The War Room (1993): Oscar-Nominated Documentary on Making Bill Clinton President

The 1992 presidential election was a triumph not only for Bill Clinton but also for the new breed of strategists who guided him to the White House-and changed the face of politics in the process. For this thrilling, behind-closed-doors account of that campaign, renowned cinema verité filmmakers Chris Hegedus and D. A. Pennebaker captured the brainstorming and bull sessions of Clinton's crack team of consultants-especially James Carville and George Stephanopoulos, who became media stars in their own right as they injected a savvy, youthful spirit and spontaneity into the process of campaigning. Fleet-footed and entertaining, The War Room is a vivid document of a political moment whose truths ("It's the economy, stupid!") still ring in our ears. 93 min. Includes a Q&A with directors D. A. Pennebaker and Chris Hegedus.
