A free, 40-minute organ recital. The mechanical-action pipe organ was built in 1964 by the Schlicker more Organ Company of Buffalo, New York, and rebuilt by the Andover Organ Company of Methuen, Massachusetts in 1981. Paulien Oltheten explores the vagaries of human relations in public space. In an ongoing process that more oscillates between video, photography, and drawings, the artist records, tracks, and assembles visual and conceptual patterns in the encounter of people and things, revealing the shifts and ruptures between them. For this event, Oltheten performs one of her “Sort of Lectures” in which she interweaves different works in a narrative structure, layering them in form and time: with a camera in her hand, she browses through piled up photographs, zooms in on details, films paper sheets with text comments, and shows moving image; all directly projected onto the screen. The result appears as a kind of performed archive, an anthropological study, and documentary. less

Lecture | The Evolution of the American Sublime


Jackson Lears, cultural and intellectual historian and distinguished professor of history at Rutgers more University, discusses the evolution of “the American sublime.” Originally arising from a Romantic, Protestant faith in the divinity of wild nature, the notion was transformed and fragmented in the late 19th and 20th centuries. Americans came to attach notions of sublimity to technology and celebrity but remained attracted to a more complex vision of nature, one that oscillated between ecological perceptions of dense biodiversity and minimalist conceptions of emptiness and openness—what Wallace Stevens called “the empty spirit / in vacant space.” By the early 21st century, postmodern theorists advanced the idea that nature was culturally constructed. Lears asks: Has any coherent idea of sublimity survived? less

Opening Reception | Scaryoke!!!, an Interactive Public Singing Exhibit


An inquiry into the joy and terror of singing in public, with snacks. Singing can be joyous. Research more shows that music produces a wash of chemicals to the brain—endorphins and serotonin and dopamine—and lowers stress-related cortisol levels. Singing can be terrifying. Reporting a New York Times Magazine story about the fertile karaoke scene in Portland, Oregon, journalist and editor Dan Kois watched several groups of friends play a game they called scaryoke: A singer gets on stage; her friends pick out a song for her; the singer, surprised, must do her best. Scaryoke!!! is a lot of things. It's a six-week party: a chance for New Yorkers to sing on a Saturday night, on their lunch hour, or after a morning jog. It's an experiment, encouraging visitors to explore the outer boundaries of their own performative instincts and capacity for risk-taking. It's an exploration of the different modes of public and private singing, from the tune whistled in the shower to the ballad belted out in a bar after three vodka tonics. Basically, it's a joy factory. Get in line! John Brophy of Portland's innovative Baby Ketten Karaoke will supply the exhibition's songs, and will KJ the opening reception, his first-ever New York appearance. Other events will feature the pipes of New York journalists, writers, and comedians to help set the mood and encourage everyone to sing. And at exhibition's end, he'll screen a movie of the whole experience. less
