Lecture | The Forgotten Borough: Staten Island in New York City, 1898-1964

Staten Island was not always an anomaly among the boroughs, different and often forgotten. When Greater New York was created in 1898, some of the most enthusiastic support came from what would become the Borough of Richmond, which voted nearly 4-1 in favor of consolidation. Though wary of being enveloped by their giant neighbors, many Staten Islanders expressed great optimism for an expected boost in public services and infrastructure, which they predicted would lead to commercial, industrial and residential growth. Perhaps more than anything, they looked for a direct physical link with the rest of the city through its incipient subway system, which opened in 1904. However, the honeymoon was brief. What followed over the next four decades was constant frustration as Staten Island was repeatedly excluded from each expansion of the subway system. Its long physical isolation from the rest of the city played no small part in its following a distinct development pattern among the five boroughs. Speaker Kenneth Gold, a writer in residence in the Library’s Wertheim Study, is the Dean of Education at the College of Staten Island, City University of New York, CUNY.

Tour | Greenwich Village Tour

Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all.

Opening Reception | New Oil Paintings by Jan De Vliegher

Layering rich hues of wet oil paint and working from the shoulder, De Vliegher takes an athletic approach to an otherwise banal nature scene, offering a series of large-scale canvases that contrast deep, murky waters with fluorescent patterned figures. In a meditation on mark-making, rhythm, and symphonic harmony, a world built on landscape and impressionism emerges, breathing new life into these time-honored genres while catalyzing a new approach to abstraction, repetition, and action painting.

Performance | Performance Art: Einat Amir's Our Best Intentions

Our Best Intentions invites audience members to take part in an intimate participatory performance combining elements from psychotherapy, theater and art. As individuals walk into a space divided into four domestic areas — a family lounge, a bedroom, a study, and a dining room – each participant selects a vest featuring an array of labels, such as "mother," "doubt," "addiction," "lover," and so forth. Under the direction of four moderators, the performance becomes a collaborative session wherein participants are encouraged to use personal stories and memories to confront unresolved issues, form momentary and intimate connections with strangers, and reveal themselves in unexpected ways. Our Best Intentions is an unpredictable series of interactions between moderators and audience members that seeks to contrast the individual/internal experience of therapy with the more dramatic devices of performance. As the action moves through the demarcated space, the audience is both active and passive, taking turns to watch other groups and participate within their own area, adding to the climatic, often emotional rollercoaster ride of different scenes that unfold in the space. Each interactive, closed session performance is 1 hour.

Discussion | The Reckoning: Women Artists of The New Millennium Book Launch and Panel Discussion

Does it still make sense to talk about art by women as a distinct category? How does the work of women artists reflect contemporary concerns? How are women artists faring vis-a-vis men in the hyper-commercialized contemporary art market? This panel explores the evolving status and concerns of women artists who followed the pioneering feminist artists of the 1970s. It brings together Eleanor Heartney, Nancy Princenthal, Helaine Posner and Sue Scott to discuss the work of women artists born after 1960, with a focus on changing attitudes toward the body and sexuality; the globalization of social and political issues; introspection, dream and fantasy as subversive strategies; and contemporary responses to society’s mixed messages about gender roles and the domestic sphere.

Concert | Water Seed, a Bold Soul Ensemble with an Unpredictable Experimental Edge

Water Seed combines the joyous sounds of traditional New Orleans jazz with the adventurous funk of Parliament. Whether giving a Stevie Wonder classic the bayou brass band treatment or driving dance parties with the vigorous polyrhythm of its original tunes, this Atlanta-by-way-of-New Orleans outfit serves up an exuberant live show. The group takes the stage fresh off the release of its new album, Wonder Love, Part 2.
