Discussion | Super-Powering Watchdog Journalism With Data — and Empathy

Journalism has long been fueled by human intuition and empathy, but innovative technologies now give us a bird's-eye view of our world — and from that distance, sometimes we forget that the numbers describe humans. This wasn't lost when reporters used data to investigate the Catholic church's sex abuse scandal; it isn't lost when reporters create tools to keep powerful people in check; and it mustn't be lost as we mine social networks for data that we could once only dream of gathering. Hear from a panel of three pioneering journalists who have unique experiences in this field: Matt Carroll worked at the Boston Globe for 26 years. He was part of the investigations team that uncovered the Catholic church's sex abuse scandal, which was featured in the Academy Award winning movie, "Spotlight." He now helps graduate students create innovative tools for newsrooms at the MIT Media Lab. Miguel Paz is an investigative reporter who created data journalism website Poderopedia, which keeps track of the powerful players in business and politics in Chile, Colombia and Venezuela. He is a lecturer at the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism. Lam Thuy Vo is a data and graphics journalist who has held multiple positions with the Wall Street Journal, most recently with the investigative team. She was also the head Al Jazeera America's interactives team. She'll soon be off at a Buzzfeed fellowship, studying ethical ways to mine and use social data for storytelling.

Talk | After Brexit, and Before the Trumping: Is This the End, or the Reinforcement, of Neoliberalism?

The US polls are narrowing and what was once unthinkable may become the unalterable, just as the UK found with Brexit. There is a great deal at stake here, so analyzing what is driving such a phenomenon and figuring out what all this means for the future of liberal political economies going forward are vital. Opinion is divided. Some scholars see economics as dominant, with the debt hangover and austerity cure pushing mass publics into reaction. Others see culture and psychology at work, with racism and authoritarianism on the rise. This talk attempts to navigate between these two currents by providing a more general model of economic and political change that can encompass both explanations. Doing so, it is hoped, can give us some insights into whether or not these trends and events spell the end, or the reinforcement, of neoliberalism. Speaker Mark Blyth is the Eastman Professor of Political Economy at the Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs at Brown University.

Talk | Grassroots Activism and the Possibilities of Political Change

This talk explores impacts made by early twentieth century progressives and radicals, and postwar gay and lesbian social movements on the contemporary American political system. Speaker Timothy Stewart-Winter's Queer Clout: Chicago and the Rise of Gay Politics argues that in postwar America, the path to political power for gays and lesbians led through city hall and depended on black-led liberal political coalitions against police harassment. As the first archive-based study of the arc of urban gay politics in the post-Stonewall era, Queer Clout weaves together activism and electoral politics, shifting the story from the coastal gay meccas to the nation's great inland metropolis. Timothy Stewart-Winter is an associate professor of history at Rutgers University-Newark and former NYPL Frederick Lewis Allen Room researcher-in-residence. His writing has appeared in publications including the Journal of American History, the Journal of Urban History, the New York Times, and Dissent.

Author Reading | Joshua Hammer discusses his book The Bad-Ass Librarians of Timbuktu

To save precious centuries-old Arabic texts from Al Qaeda, a band of librarians in Timbuktu pulls off a brazen heist worthy of Ocean’s Eleven. In the 1980s, a young adventurer and collector for a government library, Abdel Kader Haidara, journeyed across the Sahara Desert and along the Niger River, tracking down and salvaging tens of thousands of ancient Islamic and secular manuscripts that had fallen into obscurity. The Bad-Ass Librarians of Timbuktu tells the incredible story of how Haidara, a mild-mannered archivist and historian from the legendary city of Timbuktu, later became one of the world’s greatest and most brazen smugglers.

Author Reading | Lynne B. Sagalyn discusses her book Power at Ground Zero: Politics, Money, and the Remaking of Lower Manhattan

The destruction of the World Trade Center complex on 9/11 set in motion a chain of events that fundamentally transformed both the United States and the wider world. War has raged in the Middle East, and Americans have become accustomed to surveillance, enhanced security, and periodic terrorist attacks. But the symbolic locus of the post-9/11 era has always been "Ground Zero" – the sixteen acres in Manhattan's financial district where the twin towers fell. In Power at Ground Zero, Lynne Sagalyn presents the definitive account of one of the greatest reconstruction projects in modern history. The culmination of over a decade of research, her book is both epic in scope and granular in detail. While the emotional dimension of 9/11 shaped the rebuilding effort, supercharging its sanctity and complexity with truly unique politics, Sagalyn shows the process was also a classic New York story.

Discussion | Media Malpractice and the Election

How responsible is the media for calling out a candidate's untruths? Has the media employed a double-standard in reporting on Hillary Clinton's candidacy? What role has gender played? How have different media shaped (and misshaped) the campaign? How has the ascent of social media altered the role of the traditional press? What lessons do we need to draw from media coverage of this election? What changes need to be considered? What is the role of media in a democracy? Join the conversation with a group of deeply engaged political and media analysts one week before the most important election of our lifetimes. Speakers include Joan Walsh, Farai Chideya, Rinku Sen, and Katha Pollit. Moderated by Laura Flanders with a special introduction by Katrina vanden Heuvel.

Lecture | With Whistler in Venice

A lecture by Heather R. Nolin, Assistant Director of Exhibitions, Programming, and Education at Yale University Art Gallery. James McNeill Whistler (1834–1903) lived and worked in Venice from September 1879 to November 1880. The artist had declared bankruptcy just prior to his arrival there and his possessions were liquidated in London in his absence. Yet despite his personal troubles, Whistler managed during these fourteen months to produce some of his most innovative and genuinely sublime works. This lecture shall survey the artist’s life and examine many of the over fifty exquisitely etched plates, almost one hundred pastels, and several oil paintings that he created in Venice to discover how and why this period proved to be a turning point for the artist, in both financial and artistic terms.

Author Reading | David Kunzle discusses his book Chesucristo: The Fusion in Word and Image of Che Guevara and Jesus Christ

After his death, Che Guevara became an idol and was even compared to Jesus Christ. Many images, poems, plays, and films bear witness to this remarkable process, which made studious use of Christian iconography. In this way, Che Guevara became a Christ figure for our times. In order to explain their real affinity, the author examines Jesus as a historical figure and illuminates parallels with Che.

Talk | Moving Still: A Conversation with Legendary Photographer Lois Greenfield

Lois Greenfield has created a body of remarkable images that stop dancers in flight. As she has written, "The ostensible subject of my photographs may be motion, but the subtext is time. A dancer’s movements illustrate the passage of time, giving it a substance, materiality and space. In my photographs, time is stopped, a split second becomes an eternity and an ephemeral moment is solid as sculpture.” In this event, Lois Greenfield will join in conversation with Paul Galando, President of Dance Films Association and Founding Director of Dance and New Media at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, in which they will discuss her new body of work as well as the inspiration, methods, and approaches that have motivated the creation of her groundbreaking images.

John Adams was born and raised in New England in 1947. He learned the clarinet from his father and played in marching bands and community orchestras during his formative years. He began composing at age ten and heard his first orchestral pieces performed while still a teenager. The intellectual and artistic traditions of New England, including his studies at Harvard University and attendance at Boston Symphony Orchestra concerts, helped shape him as an artist and thinker. After earning two degrees from Harvard, he moved to Northern California in 1971 and has since lived in the San Francisco Bay area.
