Conference | The Opioid Epidemic and the Therapeutic Community Model

The opioid epidemic is devastating individuals, families, and communities around the world. Medication-assisted treatment and short-term rehabilitation are common treatment options for individuals with opioid use disorder, especially in the United States, but do not meet the needs of all individuals. The therapeutic community model offers a unique treatment frame to address individuals with opioid use disorder, and may at times be preferred by patients over current first-line interventions. This conference will explore the evidence supporting different treatment options for opioid use disorder around the world, highlighting the TC modality as uniquely effective and using a current European model—San Patrignano, the largest TC in the world—to identify salient mediators of outcome.

Author Reading | Assassins Against the Old Order: Italian Anarchist Violence in Fin de Siècle Europe

The image of the anarchist assassin haunted the corridors of power and the popular imagination in the late nineteenth century. Fear spawned a gross but persistent stereotype: a swarthy "Italian" armed with a bloody knife or revolver and bred to violence by a combination of radical politics, madness, innate criminality, and poor genes. That Italian anarchists targeted--and even killed--high-profile figures added to their exaggerated, demonic image. Nunzio Pernicone and Fraser M. Ottanelli dig into the transnational experiences and the historical, social, cultural, and political conditions behind the phenomenon of anarchist violence in Italy. Looking at political assassinations in the 1890s, they illuminate the public effort to equate anarchy's goals with violent overthrow. Throughout, Pernicone and Ottanelli combine a cutting-edge synthesis of the intellectual origins, milieu, and nature of Italian anarchist violence with vivid portraits of its major players and their still-misunderstood movement.

Lecture | In War and Peace: Development of Independent Reporting in (Post-)Yugoslav Space

The role of media in creating and disseminating political spin, propaganda, and “patriotic reporting” as tools for promoting and perpetuating conflict during the 1990s Yugoslav wars of secession is well researched in recent scholarship. However, it is impossible to claim the same in regard to the independent media. There is a noticeable lack of scholarship on the role the independent media had in challenging the war narratives, advancing accurate reporting, and even forging peace during the tragic Yugoslav conflict. Marija Šajkaš’s lecture aims to fill this gap. She will discuss the formation of the independent media in the countries of the former Yugoslavia. She will analyze the early connections made on opposing sides such as Alternative Information Network in order to demonstrate that the independent media and their journalists played the essential role in countering hate speech. Finally, she will point out how crucial and relevant is their activity in local and global media landscape today.

Author Reading | A Generous Vision: The Creative Life of Elaine de Kooning

Cathy Curtis's biography of Elaine de Kooning portrays a woman whose intelligence, droll sense of humor, and generosity of spirit endeared her to friends and gave her a starring role in the close-knit world of New York artists. Her zest for adventure and freewheeling spending were as legendary as her ever-present cigarette. Flamboyant and witty in person, she was an incisive art writer who expressed maverick opinions in a deceptively casual style. As a painter, she melded Abstract Expressionism with a lifelong interest in bodily movement to capture subjects as diverse as President John F. Kennedy and bullfights.
