Lecture | Pushkin Divided


On March 16, 1937, Serge Lifar opened his exhibition Pushkin and His Epoch in Paris at the Salle Pleyel more to celebrate the one-hundredth anniversary of Pushkin’s death. Lifar organized his Pushkin exhibition to assert publicly his Russian heritage and his central role in emigrant Russian culture. In this lecture, Klára Móricz explores the cultural significance of the Pushkin anniversary for the Russian emigrant community in Paris, contrasting it with the extravagant, state-sponsored Pushkin jubilee in Soviet Russia, which served as a rehearsal for the politically more significant twentieth-anniversary of the October Revolution, both celebrations taking place at the height of political show trials. less

Screening | Word War 1 is an epic documetary series compiled by CBS and narrated by Robert Ryan


The show came out in the 1950s and features extensive coverage of all aspects of the Great War using more restored B & W footage of astounding quality. Talk | Overcoming Section 377: The Decriminalization of Homosexuality by the Indian Supreme Court


On September 6th, in a landmark judgment for the LGBTQ community in India, the Supreme Court abolished more Section 377, a colonial-era sodomy law that was used to criminalize homosexuality. Columbia Law School's Menaka Guruswamy and Arundhati Katju represented the lead petitioners in the case, seeking to overturn Section 377 on the basis that it was unconstitutional, as it enabled discrimination and stigmatization of individuals on the basis of their sexual orientation and expression. Leading up to the hearing, they were the prime architects of a creative, multi-year litigation strategy to rid India of Section 377, which Guruswamy called "a colonial stain on [India's] collective national conscience" an archaic law that sowed debilitating fear and stigma among sexual minorities. Guruswamy and Katju argued that sexuality and its expression are fundamental human experiences, and to enable discrimination on the basis of sexuality and its expression denies individuals of their fundamental human rights. less

Undertaken with the best intentions, our more efforts to dissuade cultural appropriation have grown punitive and hostile to imaginative risk-taking. Particularly suspect, the use of dialect in poetry has long been as contentious as it is symptomatic of larger trends within and beyond the literary community. Some poets and critics have dismissed dialect as a flawed literary device, while others have used it to counter academic tendencies in American poetry. Today, few discussions of dialect even make it to the page, instead raising questions of permission and authority before craft. How do we subvert the border agents of cultural identity to address our best intentions anew? less
