This park offers all the best wild foods of the rich seashore habitat. The sandy soil is poor, limiting tree growth but benefiting plants that can take advantage of the unblocked sunlight and nutrient-poor soil. You will find burdock, one of the largest, tastiest, and most nutritious of the root vegetables, bitter dock, garlic mustard, field garlic, sheep sorrel, poor man's pepper, lamb's quarters, and winter cress, each with their own flavors and uses. The sun and sand make this one of the best habitats for root vegetables: sweet wild parsnips, peppery common evening primrose roots, highly-flavored, white-colored wild carrots, plus sassafras, the original source of root beer. Fruit and berries are still going strong in late fall: winged sumac, which makes pink lemonade, and autumn olive berries, which taste like a combination of raspberries, currants, and pomegranates. The tour will last for about 4 hours. Please wear a mask and observe social distancing.
