But how did an office building meant to be the tallest in the world become the 11-story home to most of America's most talented musicians and industry professionals? This is the story of how, and why, the vast majority of chart hits from America and beyond came from a single address in Midtown, Manhattan. Join author Will Friedwald (Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Village Voice, New York Observer) and learn about: - The origins of the Brill Building. - Why virtually every major star of the swing era had offices in the Brill Building, from Duke Ellington and Benny Goodman to Frank Sinatra and Nat King Cole. - The Brill Building publishers who published the majority of Hollywood's hit songs in their classic movie musicals. - The relationship between the Brill Building and iconic songwriters like Irving Berlin, Johnny Green, and Hoagy Carmichael. Film | John Cale & Lou Reed's Songs for Drella - A Fiction (1990): "a moving testament to one of the '60s most important icons" Andy Warhol (virtual)


In 1989, John Cale and Lou Reed, both formely of the Velvet Underground, reunited for the first time more in years to pay tribute to Andy Warhol (1928-1987), a leading figure in the visual art movement known as pop art and their longtime friend and collaborator. The result was Songs for Drella, a song cycle recounting the pop artist's life. The title borrows John and Lou's affectionate nickname for Warhol -- a combination of Dracula and Cinderella. The performance contains all the passion that had brought the two together and driven them apart in their notorious split from the Velvet Underground nearly two decades before. The arresting cinematic document of this landmark musical event was shot by Academy Award-nominated cinematographer Ed Lachman (Carol, Velvet Goldmine). The stream will be available till Nov 19th. less
