Dance Performance | Brian Lobel's Hold My Hand and We're Halfway There, an Interactive Dance Performance and Installation

An interactive performance installation that uses four televisions, 12 headsets, a sturdy bed and 100 classic musicals to explore issues of isolation, community, secret pleasures and the age-old question, When are you alone? And when are you lonely? Every day from 9am-5pm for 5 days – the equivalent of a 40hr work week – Brian Lobel will dance nonstop in his bedroom, inviting any and all passersby to join him, to dance with him, to watch a musical film of their choice or to simply stand inside and watch. The piece links Depression-era dance marathons, where contestants danced until they dropped in pursuit of fame and fortune, to young boys dancing in their bedroom after school, where they too dance until they drop, often hoping for fame and fortune. The piece is both fun and frightening, exhausting and exhilarating and a reflection on loneliness, labor, and labors of love. Because the performance is durational, audience members can come and go at any time and stay for as long as they choose.

Video | Documentary on the Business of War: Eugene Jarecki's Why We Fight (2006)

Explores a half-century of U.S. foreign policy from World War II to the Iraq War, revealing how, as Dwight Eisenhower had warned in his 1961 Farewell Address, political and corporate interests have become alarmingly entangled in the business of war. On a deeper level, what emerges is a portrait of a nation in transition--drifting dangerously far from her founding principles toward a more imperial and uncertain future.

Performance | Theater for the New City's Tally Ho!, or Navigating the Future, an Outdoors Performance

Theater for the New City's award-winning Street Theater Company is in its 33rd annual tour, this year doing Tally Ho!, or Navigating the Future, a rip-roaring musical with book, lyrics and direction by Crystal Field and musical score composed by David Tice. Productions take place at various outside venues across the city. TNC's award-winning Street Theater always contains an elaborate assemblage of trap doors, giant puppets, smoke machines, masks, original choreography and a huge (9' x 12') running screen providing continuous movement behind the actors. The company of 27 actors, twelve crew members, two assistant directors and five live musicians shares the challenge of performing outside and holding a large, non-captive audience. The music varies in style from Bossa Nova to Gilbert & Sullivan. The musical is a morality play about how America, facing financial failure, must set a course through the uncertainty of what's to come.

Theater | To Love and To Cherish

All marriage is compromise, but sometimes even the most elastic of relationships can be strained to the breaking point. In Gene Ruffini’s world premiere drama, sixty-something professional couple Paul and Joan West find her birthday celebration marred by familial realizations and recriminations. Sick of the hypocrisy and denials among his “always-loving” relatives, and fueled by drink and his impending divorce, their eldest son Don lashes out at his parents, his soon-to-be-ex-wife, his “perfect” brother, and his lesbian sister and her girlfriend, desperately trying to get all present to confront his proclamations of infidelity, betrayal, enabling and self-loathing. A play where sins of the father and mother come crashing down upon the children, where pride goes before the fall, and where the question becomes “how much is too much” when it comes to sticking by those you profess to love? By Gene Ruffini. Directed by Jessica Zweiman. Featuring: Bruce Colbert, Thesa Loving, Andrew Langton, Jessica Pohly, Jake Green, Kelly Campbell, Bethany Braun, Kimberlee Walker.

Screening | New Austrian Documentary: Andrew Standen-Raz's Vinyl (2009)

Vienna as it has never been seen before - from the viewpoint of the contemporary electronic musicians, experimental artists and cultural icons whose unique way of life and creative work has been shaped by the fall of the Iron Curtain. As with the change from Vinyl to Digital downloading, the "Vienna Sound" is shown to be a result of musicians and artists coping with the changing realities of their rapidly changing city. The tension is heightened by the exciting backdrop of the European Cup, which disturbs this laid-back city and its artists with a once in a life time opportunity to be the center of the World. Director Standen-Raz will be in attendance.

Concert | French Chansons, Scots Songs and duets from Otello, Manon Lescaut!

Soprano Lesley Craigie in her New York debut recital with internationally acclaimed tenor Carl Tanner and Evan Solomon at the piano. The program includes duets from Otello, Manon Lescaut, Peter Grimes, as well as French Chanson and Scots Songs. Ms. Craigie's ever increasing opera career spans throughout Europe and the USA, having sung in the UK, Italy, Switzerland and for several companies thoughout the USA and includes over 14 roles spanning many genres of music from Giunone in Calvalli's masterpiece "La Calisto", and Donna Elvira (Don Giovanni) to the romantic roles of Lauretta (Gianni Schicchi), Giulietta (Tales of Hoffmann) for the Bay Area Summer Opera Theater Institute, as well as performing more diverse roles of Polly Peachum (Three Penny Opera), and the role of Muriel in the world premiere of "The Alien Corn" by Thomas Benjamin. Ms. Craigie also performs regularly in concerts and oratorios, including the soprano soloist in Mendelssohn's Elijah, Rossini's Petite Messe Solennelle and Mozart's Requiem with Glasgow City Chorus, and the Orchestra of Scottish Opera. In late 1991 while working as a singing waiter in the restaurant Bianchi and Margarita's, Carl Tanner was heard by Richard Gaddes, the head of the Santa Fe Opera, who arranged for him to join the Apprentice Program for Singers for 1992 (and then 1993) to obtain more training. One of Tanner's first breaks came from the Opera Theatre of Northern Virginia, which signed him in 1994 to sing the title role in the rarely performed Edgar by Puccini. Tanner has since starred in a variety of leading roles in major opera houses, including Pagliacci in La Monnaie, Brussels, "Cavaradossi" in the Minnesota Orchestra production of Tosca, and Radames (alongside soprano Angela Brown) in Opera Pacific's Aida. After performances with the Washington National Opera in their 2004-2005 season productions of Samson and Delilah and Il Trovatore, he returned to Santa Fe to sing "Calaf" in Turandot during the company's 2005 summer season. Tanner has also sung Calaf at many major opera houses in Germany plus, in 2006, he sang the role at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino under the direction of Zubin Mehta.
