You can take at least 13 free tours every day of the year, except the New Year Day, July 4th, and the Christmas Day. Dance Performance | Our Lady of Detritus, an Interactive Installation and Performance Piece


Choreographer Jill Sigman and composer Kristin Norderval bring their mobile, interactive installaion-performance piece. Passersby will be asked to contribute “confessions” about their physical and emotional trash. These recorded or written testimonials will then be incorporated into an instant sound/movement performance.

The play takes taks the audience on a journey through a natural environment as the scenes unfold around them. "The process creates a bond among the audience and they leave with open hearts, wide eyes and changed minds," says the play's creator Markell Kiefer. "Because of this many consider it a healing play, an offering for peace." The Buddha Prince draws from both eastern and western artistic traditions, mixing physical theatre with mask, puppetry and traditional Tibetan music and dance.

Theater | “Shakespeare's Anti-Christian Satires: The Virgin Mary Parodies”


Was Shakespeare actually a Marrano Jewish woman? This production, guided by a radical new dramaturgy, demonstrates the idea with performances of anti-Christian satires in three of Shakespeare's best-known tragedies. Before the performance at 2:15pm, there will be a "Virgin Mary Mystery Play Procession," an outdoor event at Washington Square, starting at southern end near chess boards. This is a procession that leads the audience to the theater.

New York Magazine’s Best Lounge Act of 2009, Ethan Lipton & His Orchestra plays a brand of jazz-folk-country-blues with sharp wit and a cockeyed worldview. Lipton and his bandmates deliver their uniquely American music with mixed-message sincerity and soul. Cynthia Hopkins & Gloria Deluxe has played at the Bowery Ballroom (opening for David Byrne), the 2001 Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival, Pete’s Candy Store, Tonic, and Joe’s Pub, among numerous other venues, In the band’s first performance outside of New York City, they opened for Patti Smith at MASS MoCA.

Concert | Listen to “The Auerglass,” a two-person pump organ


The Auerglass is a two-person wooden pump organ designed by the artist Tauba Auerbach with her friend Cameron Mesirow of the band Glasser. The instrument cannot be played alone. It requires two people to play. One player has to pump in order for the other to play and vice versa. There is a four-octave scale that is divided so that each of the two players plays every other note. Auerbach and Mesirow will play a composition written specifically for the instrument. It combines music that Auerbach wrote as a child, songs from Glasser and new material. Ida Falck Øien, who creates the costumes for Glasser, has created special costumes with shifting states for the Auerglass players to wear.

Staged Reading | Larry Myers' Memo from Allen Ginsberg


A new play by the award-winning off-Broadway playwright , makes its Manhattan debut in a staged reading directed by Kat Georges. The play highlights an evening of Beatnik Theater & Poetry and is a featured event of the New York Howl Festival. The play features characters representing some of the leading Beat figures including Ginsberg, Carl Solomon, Harold Norse and Neal Cassady. They meet their match in the form of a bevy of unheralded Beat women. The play focuses on mental illness as a real social issue and the belief that women were the bedrock of the All Boys Beat Club. Discussions by Beat scholars and poetry will follow the play.

The Inwood Astronomy Project is the largest public outreach program in New York City, hoping to get 5000 New Yorkers to come look through a telescope for the first time. They will be giving away posters, postcards, and other doodads. There is always a telescope to look through, and a knowledgeable astronomer to answer questions.
