Concert | Listen to “The Auerglass,” a two-person pump organ

The Auerglass is a two-person wooden pump organ designed by the artist Tauba Auerbach with her friend Cameron Mesirow of the band Glasser. The instrument cannot be played alone. It requires two people to play. One player has to pump in order for the other to play and vice versa. There is a four-octave scale that is divided so that each of the two players plays every other note. Auerbach and Mesirow will play a composition written specifically for the instrument. It combines music that Auerbach wrote as a child, songs from Glasser and new material. Ida Falck Øien, who creates the costumes for Glasser, has created special costumes with shifting states for the Auerglass players to wear.

Opening Reception | Intangible Moods, a Group Show of Four Women Artists

An exhibition including twelve works by four women artists depicting minimalist abstract forms. Artists featured in are Julie Hedrick, Heather Hutchison, Carole Seborovski and Francisca Sutil. Though their idioms are quite different, the effects of light, color and depth unite the works of these artists. In combining these components, each artist - with a unique vision and voice - engages the spectator's awareness and perceptions, provoking visual experiences that are rather enigmatic and challenging, sublime and arresting.

In 1976, Kitajima made his impressive debut with photographs capturing Koza in Okinawa, a town near the US military base, in the period just after the end of the Vietnam War. Subsequently, he expanded his purview to include Tokyo, New York, Eastern Europe, and the Soviet Union, just as that nation was on the verge of collapse. This show, featuring portrait work from each of these series, presents the most complete picture to date of the photographer's work from 1975 - 1991, including many previously unseen works.

Opening Reception | Photography Exhibition: Tenzing Paljor's A Tibetan Pilgrim: Travel Through The Vanishing Himalaya

In 2007, Paljor initiated the Vanishing Himalaya project and traveled through the Indian Himalaya documenting the tradition and cultural heritage, a journey he describes as a "pilgrimage." Over the course of six months, he traveled through dramatic and desolate landscapes in the remote regions of Ladakh, Zanskar, Spiti, Kinnaur, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh, documenting the people who live in harsh environments where the Tibetan Buddhist way of life is still preserved. In August of 2007, Tenzing visited Lithang, his ancestral home in Eastern Tibet, for six days. He only was able to take photographs for a few hours during his stay and several of these photos are included in this exhibition. The exhibition serves as a symbolic journey of a Tibetan exile and conveys through photographs a celebration of the many facets of life in the Indian Himalaya that are uniquely Tibetan. It also expresses the inherent union of culture and way of life across the Himalaya. The Vanishing Himalaya project seeks to document and archive Himalayan and Tibetan cultural heritage at a time of acute change and radical transformation.

Discussion | Art as Civil Disobedience

A conversation between Galit Eilat, founder of the Israeli Center for Digital Art’s Mobile Archive and director of the Israeli Center for Digital Art, and Ramallah-based curator and art historian, Reem Fadda. Eilat and Fadda consider the role of art as a tool for civil disobedience and passive resistance that affects its surroundings, wielded by individuals during times of social or political distress. Within this context they discuss Liminal Spaces, a long-term project examining the possibility of joint action in light of the ever-growing existential hardship of Palestinians living under Israeli occupation. Video works that were produced during this project will be on view at Art in General as part of the Mobile Archive, a cross-national library of video art.

Author Reading | David Allen Sibley on his book The Sibley Guide to Trees

The man who revolutionized the field guide to birds now brings his formidable skills of identification and illustration to the more than six hundred tree species of North America. Similar in size and format to The Sibley Guide to Birds, the layout for this guide is another triumph of logic and concision. Species are arranged taxonomically, not by features such as leaf shape (as in most other guides), which enables the user to browse the images to find a match for an observed tree in the same way a birder uses the bird guide.
