Concert | Listen to “The Auerglass,” a two-person pump organ

The Auerglass is a two-person wooden pump organ designed by the artist Tauba Auerbach with her friend Cameron Mesirow of the band Glasser. The instrument cannot be played alone. It requires two people to play. One player has to pump in order for the other to play and vice versa. There is a four-octave scale that is divided so that each of the two players plays every other note. Auerbach and Mesirow will play a composition written specifically for the instrument. It combines music that Auerbach wrote as a child, songs from Glasser and new material. Ida Falck Øien, who creates the costumes for Glasser, has created special costumes with shifting states for the Auerglass players to wear.

Author Reading | Elzbieta Matynia discusses her book Performative Democracy

This book explores a potential in political life that easily escapes theorists: the indigenously inspired enacting of democracy by citizens. Written by one who experienced an emerging public sphere in Communist Poland, the book seeks to identify the conditions for performativity–performing politics–in public life. Matynia examines a broad spectrum of cultural, social, and political initiatives that facilitated the nonviolent transformation of an autocratic environment into a democratic one. Examples of performativity range from experimental student theater, through the engaged political thinking of dissident Adam Michnik, the alternative culture, and the Solidarity movement, to the drama of the Round Table Talks (and their striking parallels in South Africa), and finally, the post-1989 efforts of feminist groups and women artists to defend the recently won right of free public discourse. The book argues that performative democracy, with its improvisational mode and imaginative solutions, deserves a legitimate place in our broader reflections on democracy. The discussants include Professors Jeffrey Goldfarb (NSSR), Irena Grudzinska Gross (Princeton University), and Shireen Hassim, (University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg).

Talk | A Helping Hand Or A Stab In The Back - Which Is More Human?

World-renowned primatologist Dr. Frans de Waal will discuss his ground-breaking book The Age of Empathy: Nature's Lessons for a Kinder Society. An exploration of the origins of human morality that challenges many of our most basic assumptions, the book has been written by one of the world's leading primatologists, de Waal, called one of the world's 100 most influential people by Time and the winner of the Los Angeles Times Book Award. De Waal's newest book looks at the question of whether competitive, selfish behavior is really "instinctive" and "natural," an outgrowth of evolution and the survival of the fittest. However, using research from anthropology, psychology, neuroscience, and animal behavior, de Waal argues that humans are equally hard-wired for empathy. We are, he says, group animals - cooperative, sensitive to injustice, and mostly peace-loving - just like other primates, elephants, and dolphins. De Waal's findings have profound implications for politics, office behavior - and perhaps our very survival.

Author Reading | Nonfiction Writers Devin Johnston and Jim Guida

In compact and vivid prose, Johnston's Creaturely makes forays across the border between humans and animals, seeking out intersections between culture and nature. These essays describe encounters with creatures common to our city parks and empty lots: dogs, crows, starlings, squirrels, mice, and owls. In each case, Johnston explores the sensory experience of his subject; with each patient observation, he edges closer to an alien consciousness. Johnston is the author of a previous book of essays and three books of poetry including Sources published by Turtle Point Press in 2007. Guida's Marbles is a collection of lucid, whimsical, and sometimes biting musings on 21st-century urban life. He revives an old form, the aphorism, in ways that are sardonic, topical, and continually thought-provoking. Guida is an Australian living in New York. His work has appeared or is scheduled to appear in Yale Review, Agni, and Raritan. -
