Conference | Cities and the New Wars

The conference addresses two major subjects: 1) The multiple meanings of the new urban wars: asymmetric armed conflict, US Army training for the "urban enemy," forms of economic violence that kill, cities and urban space as a technology for war, reapropriating the city of fear, civil war refugees and their flight from and to cities, measuring human rights violations during war. The limits of power and of war: the role of the civic, war and law, the growing global web of interdependencies -- all can contest the most powerful states and all can undermine the idea of victory in war. Conditions under which powerlessness becomes complex and transcends mere victimhood. Speakers: Arjun Appadurai, The New School; Elazar Barkan, Columbia University; Ted Byfield, Parsons the New School of Design; Partha Chatterjee, Columbia University; video artist Tony Conrad; artist Susan Crile; Claire Cutler, University of Victoria; Ashley Dawson, College of Staten Island/CUNY; James Der Derian, Brown University; Environmentalists Against War (Gar Smith); Yasmine Ergas, SIPA Columbia University; Karen Jacobsen, Tufts University; Fiona Jeffries, CUNY Grad Center; Danny Kaplan, Bar Ilan University; Jennifer S. Concert | Listen to “The Auerglass,” a two-person pump organ

The Auerglass is a two-person wooden pump organ designed by the artist Tauba Auerbach with her friend Cameron Mesirow of the band Glasser. The instrument cannot be played alone. It requires two people to play. One player has to pump in order for the other to play and vice versa. There is a four-octave scale that is divided so that each of the two players plays every other note. Auerbach and Mesirow will play a composition written specifically for the instrument. It combines music that Auerbach wrote as a child, songs from Glasser and new material. Ida Falck Øien, who creates the costumes for Glasser, has created special costumes with shifting states for the Auerglass players to wear.

Performance | performance installation: COVERS

Three wearable sculptures, handmade of mostly recycled synthetic materials using classic crochet techniques and connected into one large crocheted sculpture, will be entered, separated and transformed into evolving images by performers Carrie Ahern, Jillian Hollis and Agata Oleksiak. The performance installation will raise questions of how one's own desires are projected onto the static objects one sees in store windows and investigate how our desires shift when the objects become live women, both moving and changing the shape of the objects, and vulnerable to the audience's gaze. What is the residual relationship to the objects once disinhabited by the performers and left as a new static installation?

Author Reading | Anne Nelson reads from her book Red Orchestra: The Story of the Berlin Underground and the Circle of Friends Who Resisted Hitler

Seventy years ago this September, the Nazis invaded Poland, setting off the conflagration that would become the Second World War. But in the very heart of Berlin, a band of Germans and German-Americans chose to defy the fascists, and carried out a series of daring measures of resistance -- publicizing Nazi war crimes, aiding persecuted Jews, and smuggling intelligence to the Allies. The Gestapo called them the "Red Orchestra," and among them were playwrights, actors, screenwriters -- and even a dramaturge. Loin author and playwright Anne Nelson (The Guys) as she shares rare archival photos and tells the compelling story of the Weimar Theater and film artists who were compelled to take action in the name of civil courage.

It is a gathering up of intimately shared moments with friends and strangers, rendered with a sense of mystery, wonderment, and sly humor.
