Colloquium | “Birth and Rebirth of a Nation”: D.W. Griffith's Notorious Film Today

"Birth and Rebirth of a Nation" considers current issues of race and representation in the media and beyond. Griffith’s white supremacist manifesto The Birth of a Nation is discussed in the context of contemporary developments in an attempt to reconcile the racial imagination of the average American of today with that of the average American of less than a century ago, when The Birth of a Nation was the most popular film of the day. Speakers analyze recent scholarship on racism in the period of the film and examine the film’s legacy and continuing impact. How do we think critically about the contested notion of a “post-racial” America as we look back at history? How has the social, political, and cultural context that created the movie transformed over time? From 10:00 a.m.—1:00 p.m., there will be a screening of D.W. Griffith’s The Birth of a Nation (1915), a silent film with live accompaniment. From 2:00—5:00 p.m. a colloquium with speakers Douglas A. Blackmon, Pulitzer Prize-winning author and Atlanta Bureau Chief of The Wall Street Journal; David Blight of the Gilder Lehrman Center for the Study of Slavery, Resistance and Abolition at Yale University; Bill Gaskins, photographer and essayist; Miriam J. Petty, professor of film and media studies at Rutgers University-Newark; and Michele Wallace, professor of English, women’s studies and film at CUNY Graduate Center and City College of New York. From 6:00—7:30 p.m., a screening of DJ Spooky’s Rebirth of a Nation (2002), a critical revision of Griffith’s film.

Concert | Sierra Hull & Highway 111 / Kelleigh McKenzie, Bluegrass and Folk Music

Bluegrass musician Hull and her band have received three nominations for the 2009 IBMA Awards, including Emerging Artist of the Year, Mandolin Player of the Year and Recorded Event of the Year. Alison Krauss says, "Sierra is a remarkably talented, beautiful human being. Success could not come to a more worthy person. I adore her." Armed with a banjo, guitar and amplified stompbox, Oregonian-turned-New Yorker McKenzie (pictured) has a way of mixing folk, blues, old-time and rock into a music all her own. With a whimsical voice and soaring melodies, she takes the well-worn roads of Americana to unexpected places, thumping and plucking out original tales that veer effortlessly from a graceful social consciousness to lusty romps and sinister seductions. Her acclaimed debut album Chances was recently released nationally and her song "Gin" won the 2009 Independent Music Award (IMA) for Best Americana Song.

Concert | Listen to “The Auerglass,” a two-person pump organ

The Auerglass is a two-person wooden pump organ designed by the artist Tauba Auerbach with her friend Cameron Mesirow of the band Glasser. The instrument cannot be played alone. It requires two people to play. One player has to pump in order for the other to play and vice versa. There is a four-octave scale that is divided so that each of the two players plays every other note. Auerbach and Mesirow will play a composition written specifically for the instrument. It combines music that Auerbach wrote as a child, songs from Glasser and new material. Ida Falck Øien, who creates the costumes for Glasser, has created special costumes with shifting states for the Auerglass players to wear.
