Concert | Listen to “The Auerglass,” a two-person pump organ

The Auerglass is a two-person wooden pump organ designed by the artist Tauba Auerbach with her friend Cameron Mesirow of the band Glasser. The instrument cannot be played alone. It requires two people to play. One player has to pump in order for the other to play and vice versa. There is a four-octave scale that is divided so that each of the two players plays every other note. Auerbach and Mesirow will play a composition written specifically for the instrument. It combines music that Auerbach wrote as a child, songs from Glasser and new material. Ida Falck Øien, who creates the costumes for Glasser, has created special costumes with shifting states for the Auerglass players to wear.

Lecture | Identity and Stereotype Threat: Their Nature and What to Do about Them at School and Work

Provost Claude M. Steele speaks. President Lee C. Bollinger hosts. Drawing on material from his upcoming book, Whistling Vivaldi: And Other Clues to How Stereotypes Affect Us, Steele shares the experiments and studies that show, again and again, that exposing subjects to stereotypes - merely reminding a group of female math majors about to take a math test, for example, that women are considered naturally inferior to men at math - impairs their performance in the area affected by the stereotype. Steele offers insight into how we form our senses of identity and lays out a plan for mitigating the negative effects of "stereotype threat" and reshaping American identities. The lecture will be followed by a question and answer session with the audience.
