Tour | Tour of Gracie Mansion, Home of New York's Mayors

In 1799, a prosperous New York merchant named Archibald Gracie built a country house overlooking a bend in the East River, five miles north of the then-New York City limits. Little did he know that, more than 200 years later, his home would be serving as the official residence of the First Family of New York City - a place where history is made, not merely recorded. As a historic house museum run by the Parks Department, sitting on 11 acres of grounds now known as Carl Schurz Park, Gracie Mansion has served as the home of 10 mayors, beginning first with Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia in 1942. Today, Gracie Mansion is occupied by the de Blasio family, which has opened its doors in the spirit of the administration's motto: one city, rising together. In keeping with that theme, Mayor de Blasio and First Lady Chirlane McCray have introduced a new art installation, titled “Windows on the City: Looking Out at Gracie’s New York.” Tours take place every Tuesday at 10am, 11am, 2pm, and 3pm until Dec. 12, 2017.

Lecture | Inheriting the Bomb: Soviet Collapse and Denuclearization of Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Ukraine, 1990-1994

The dramatic collapse of the Soviet empire in 1991 presented the world with an unprecedented challenge: some 29,000 Soviet strategic and tactical nuclear weapons suddenly found themselves on the territory of not one but four new sovereign nations: the Russian Federation, Ukraine, Belarus, and Kazakhstan. While Russia inherited more than two-thirds of the Soviet Union’s nuclear arsenal and its status as a recognized nuclear weapons state, the scale of nuclear inheritance of the non-Russian republics was nevertheless staggering: Ukraine became home to the third-largest and Kazakhstan – the fourth-largest strategic nuclear arsenal in the world. By 1994, the three non-Russian Soviet successors relinquished their nuclear inheritance and joined the international nonproliferation regime as non-nuclear-weapons states. What could have been the greatest single wave of nuclear proliferation in history had been successfully averted. The talk is an exploration of how this happened and why. It exposes the dilemmas and ambiguities of post-Soviet nuclear predicaments and looks at how the divergent interpretations political leaders of Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Ukraine developed regarding their nuclear inheritance affected the path of these countries toward nuclear disarmament. Speaker Mariana Budjeryn is a research fellow with the International Security and Managing the Atom programs at the Harvard Kennedy School’s Belfer Center.

Discussion | Citizenship-Stripping and Counter-Terrorism Policy: Moral, Legal and Strategic Considerations

Citizenship is widely considered to be the most stable form of individual legal status. Yet, international law provides limited constraints on the state’s sovereign prerogative to denationalize (citizenship-stripping or involuntary loss of citizenship). Deprivation of nationality, as we have repeatedly seen throughout world history, is often a prelude to expulsion and exile. Over the last century, the use of formal/legal denationalization has declined steadily, and citizenship has opened up—to women, to national minorities, to long-term residents, and dual nationals. Since 9/11, however, states have increasingly deployed denationalization as a tool in combating terrorism-related national security threats. The trend seems likely to continue. This discussion will review the applicable legal standards and practical examples from several current national contexts as a basis for debating whether denationalization should be available to states as a counter-terrorism measure. Discussion | Liquid Geographies: How Water Connects Communities

A panel discussion with artist and faculty member Lize Mogel; artist Dylan Gauthier; and historian Diane Galusha, that explores how water infrastructure, watersheds and other water bodies connect communities. Lize Mogel and Diane Galusha will discuss New York City’s water supply and its impacts on the Catskill region, and unpack the complex relationship between rural and urban communities of water supply residents and water consumers, respectively. Dylan Gauthier will discuss his recent projects on the Hudson River and in the Brandywine (PA) watershed. New School faculty member and chair of the Environmental Studies program, Timon McPhearson, will introduce the event. The goal of this dicussion is to create new understandings of the impacts of water infrastructure (and related public policy) on communities at either end of a water system, and to explore the intersection of nature, policy, and infrastructure through critical spatial practices such as socially-engaged art and counter-mapping.

In this insightful and inspirational memoir, Michael Ward returns to the early years of the AIDS epidemic, when so little was known and so few who were diagnosed survived. He chronicles in candid detail his partner Mark's decline and eventual death. By looking back on these devastating events, the author not only honors a generation lost to the illness but also opens a vital window onto the past, before medication helped save lives and when HIV/AIDS was usually a death sentence.

Lecture | Water in Sumer: Ancient Water Management

Ancient water management, especially for irrigation purposes, has featured prominently in anthropological theories on the development of socio-political and economic complexity. Traditional approaches have assumed that centralized control was needed to meet the managerial requirements of water control on a large scale. However, recent ethnographic and archaeological studies have shown that centralized control is a choice rather than a necessity. To date, there has been no empirical study on the exact nature of state control (if any) in the organization of ancient water control and irrigation due to the lack of empirical data. The only exception is ancient Mesopotamia with its extraordinarily rich archaeological and historical record on ancient water control. This talk will present an analysis of the oldest and most comprehensive record on ancient water control from the archive of the Umma province of the Ur III state (2112–2004 B.C.). This rich source provides a detailed insight into the technological and social aspects of ancient water control, which allows us to address larger theoretical questions regarding the role of the state in ancient water management and its importance for the functioning of an early state society. Lecturer: Stephanie Rost, 2017-2019 Visiting Assistant Professor. Reception to follow.

Author Reading | Kellie Jones discusses her book South of Pico: African American Artists in Los Angeles in the 1960s and 1970s

Kellie Jones explores how the artists in Los Angeles's black communities during the 1960s and 1970s created a vibrant, productive, and engaged activist arts scene in the face of structural racism. Emphasizing the importance of African American migration, as well as L.A.'s housing and employment politics, Jones shows how the work of black Angeleno artists such as Betye Saar, Charles White, Noah Purifoy, and Senga Nengudi spoke to the dislocation of migration, L.A.'s urban renewal, and restrictions on black mobility.

Film | Ruth Zylberman's Façade - 209 rue Saint Maur (2017): French Documentary

This documentary is an exploration of a Parisian building that is layered with the memories of human lives. Zylberman reconstituted the stories of most of the families who lived at 209 Saint-Maur through interviews with children who survived the war. Through roundups and deportation during the German occupation, the terror of hiding and final return to light: the evocative power of the film transforms history into a palpable experience. Although the past and its mixture of mourning, loss and survival may resurface, it can never be recovered. 90 min.

Opening Reception | José Leonilson: Empty Man: Works by a Leading Brazilian Artist

In the 1980s, when the world was reverberating from the shockwaves sent by AIDS, Brazilian artist José Leonilson (1957–1993) adapted the political discourse of the epidemic into a metaphysical rumination. His work offers a pantheon of symbols, poetics, and patterns, charting in personal terms the odyssey of a disease, which simultaneously sparked fear, confusion, and panic. José Leonilson: Empty Man, the first solo exhibition in the United States of one of Brazil’s leading figures of contemporary art. Leonilson’s mythical universe constructs an existential narrative around his own predicament, and this timeless intimacy doubly resonates in the context of a disease characterized so often by losses.

Lecture | Two Long Poems: A Lecture by Artist Theaster Gates

Theaster Gates was born in Chicago in 1973. He first encountered creativity in the music of Black churches on his journey to becoming an urban planner, potter, and artist. Gates creates sculptures with clay, tar, and renovated buildings, transforming the raw material of urban neighborhoods into radically reimagined vessels of opportunity for the community. Establishing a virtuous circle between fine art and social progress, Gates strips dilapidated buildings of their components, transforming those elements into sculptures that act as bonds or investments, the proceeds of which are used to finance the rehabilitation of entire city blocks. Gates’s non-profit, Rebuild Foundation, manages the many projects in his Chicago hometown—including the Stony Island Arts Bank, Black Cinema House, Dorchester Art and Housing Collaborative, Archive House, and Listening House—while extending its support to cities throughout the American Midwest. Many of the artist’s works evoke his African-American identity and the broader struggle for civil rights, from sculptures incorporating fire hoses, to events organized around soul food, and choral performances by the experimental musical ensemble Black Monks of Mississippi, led by Gates himself.
