Dance Performance | Choreography: Alexandra Pirici's Threshold


Trained as a dancer, artist Alexandra Pirici fuses choreography, performance, and visual arts across more her practice. In many of her artworks, she uses enactment and embodiment as strategies to reimagine historical events, re-mediate internet memes and digital images, and perform sculptural additions to public monuments. For this performance, Pirici invites a group of performers to build a moving, porous threshold at the gate that separates the eastern and western Rail Yards. For the work, Pirici creates an embodied and flexible architectural "boundary" from the performers' bodies, but one that can be negotiated and transformed. The performers' movements reference historical and aesthetic thresholds both real and imagined, with different functions, such as a barricade from the Paris Commune and the fictional borders built by war and conflict in Francisco Goya's iconic "Disasters of War" prints. As the performers' bodies and movements shift, passersby will be able to pass through, but not without having to encounter the performers in one way or another. less

Talk | The Brothers Rosenberg/Meeropol: Julius and Ethel Rosenberg's Sons Speak Out


Michael Meeropol will present his lecture “David Greenglass: Perjurer AND Spy” and Robert Meeropol more will discuss the ongoing campaign to exonerate their mother Ethel Rosenberg, before and after the election of Donald Trump. A reception with wine and cheese will follow the lecture. Michael and Robert Meeropol (born Michael and Robert Rosenberg) are the sons of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg. Their father Julius, an electrical engineer, and mother Ethel (née Greenglass), a union organizer, were members of the Communist Party. The parents were arrested in 1950 and convicted and executed in In 1953 for conspiracy to commit espionage and passing secrets to the Soviet Union. During the trial, Michael and his younger brother Robert lived first with their maternal grandmother, Tessie Greenglass, until November 1950 when she placed them in the Hebrew Children's Home in the Bronx until the end of the trial in June 1951. They then lived with their paternal grandmother, Sophie Rosenberg, in upper Manhattan until June 1952 at which time they were taken in by family friends, Ben and Sonia Bach, in Toms River, New Jersey, from June 1952 until the December after their parents' executions on June 19, 1953. The Toms River school superintendent "turned the boys away as non-residents." The brothers were eventually adopted by the lyricist, librettist, and musician Abel Meeropol and his wife Anne. less

In New York City, a movement of urban farmers has created a network of rooftop farms, built on the very more buildings that once defined the city's industrial age. In contrast, the villagers of San Bartolomé in Oaxaca, Mexico, have been growing corn, beans and squash on the same communal lands since the dawn of agriculture. This exhibit of paintings aims to create a visual bridge between these two distant worlds. Cloud Storage is a meditative installation about the writing systems we use to tell stories and store knowledge. Captured in a transparent hanging cloud in the center of the gallery, are characters and graphemes from diverse cultures. less

Opening Reception | I Rot Before I Ripen: Large-Scale Drawings by Aurel Schmidt


I Rot Before I Ripen will feature new large-scale mixed media drawings as well as an installation. Schmidt more uses gestures from landscape and the doodles of pre-pubescent girls as a vehicle to explore art historical tropes, infusing her works with girlish desire and erotic pleasure. Her complex, detailed drawings often depict hybrid or amalgamated forms that disorient the viewer and introduce absurdity, and oftentimes morbidity, into seemingly picturesque scenes. Aurel Schmidt was born in Kamploos, British Colombia and currently lives and works in New York City. Schmidt was included in Phaidon’s Vitamin D2: New Perspectives in Drawing (2013) and has exhibited nationally and internationally. Solo exhibitions include Deitch Projects, New York, and Peres Projects, Los Angeles, as well as self organized pop-up exhibitions throughout New York City. less

Film | NYsferatu: Symphony of a Century: A Silent Animated Film by Andrea Mastrovito


More Art premieres a spectacular, hand-animated, silent film that combines music and community engagement more to create a powerful and poignant statement about the horrors of the unknown and the inspiring search for liberty. Resetting Friedrich W. Murnau’s classic 1922 film Nosferatu in contemporary New York City, Mastrovito and his team of 12 artists have created over 35,000 original drawings to replicate the beautifully eerie flickering shutter effect of early cinema. The reimagined storyline and title-cards of NYsferatu were made in collaboration with recent immigrants and English as new language learners. The film is accompanied by an original musical improvisation by The Michael Leonhart Orchestra. less
