Opening Reception | Deep in a Dream: New York City: Photography

Sometime in his mid-20s, Michael Massaia began experiencing extreme bouts of insomnia. To fill the sleepless nights, the artist would travel into Manhattan to enjoy walks through the city without all of the chaos and cacophony. Carrying his personally retooled large-format cameras, Massaia started to shoot elegant, hushed photographs of Central Park devoid of people. Often preferring the early spring when the trees and bushes were just beginning to bloom, he would wait for the hour preceding dawn—looking for only a hint of the coming sun in the morning sky before the emergence of any harsh shadows. Utilizing slow black-and-white film, Massaia meticulously prints and tones his large-scale analog photographs in his darkroom back in New Jersey, which has been customized to produce prints up to 3.5 x 4.5 feet. The impressively rich, detailed gelatin silver prints exhibit a breathtaking tonal scale due to a stain developer called Pyro (notorious for its toxicity).

Hear movements from three of Price’s string quartets, lush arrangements of spirituals, and dramatic readings in a program celebrating this great and under-sung composer who synthesized European and African-American traditions. Lecture | The Urban Foodscape: A New Frontier for Design and Policy

The urban foodscape – from field to fork – has long been shaped by decisions taken either in the board rooms of large international corporations or by sector-bound national government agencies. Over the past decade, designers, architects, and city planners have started using their distinct talents and competencies to help communities restore its civic and ecological role. In this talk, based on her book Urban Food Planning: Seeds of Transition in the Global North, Dr. Rositsa Ilieva will contend that, over the past decade, designers, architects, and city planners have started using their distinct talents and competencies to help communities restore urban foodscapes’ civic and ecological role and dismantle the notion of food as a mere commodity, far-removed from the professions claiming expertise in the built environment.

Film | Christina Condak's Point 0: Architects in the Making (2017): Austrian Documentary

An oral history film done with a twist: architects reflect on their initiations into the culture of architecture education in a kind of ritual performance. Asked to recall vivid memories and relevant experiences from their education, they perform a few physical actions and tell their stories. Although filmed in front of a neutral background, specificities quickly emerge: a wide range of responses are juxtaposed, revealing essential preoccupations within three generations of architects. This is not just text as information: you see the person and you hear their story. 53 min.

Author Reading | Richard Boch reads from his book The Mudd Club

The legendary Mudd Club. You probably couldn’t get in. Jean-Michel Basquiat and Jeff Koons partied with David Byrne and Lydia Lunch. Uptown cognoscenti flirted with the children of the outer boroughs as they brought the Wild Style to the City. The downtown New York scene was more than punk, it was a mad brilliant chaos of cheap rent and experimental art. The Mudd Club was its nexus, the place that birthed the Eighties. Keith Haring claimed membership while Andy Warhol was only a guest. Debbie Harry learned to rap from Fab Five Freddy while Klaus Nomi practiced arias and served home-cooked pastries.

Lecture | The Aesthetics of Water: Wellheads, Cisterns, and Fountains in the Venetian Dominion

When we think of Venice, we think of a city in the sea, surrounded by water. And yet, before the modern era, the city had no source of fresh water other than the rain from heaven or barges from the mainland. Therein lies the paradox: Venice is in the water and has no water. This lecture addresses how Venetians rose to the challenge by creating a unique system of water collection, and a unique genre of public art: the Venetian wellhead. It addresses as well a different challenge that came with the expansion of the Venetian empire: the gift of running water and the need to harness it. Again, the Venetians seized the initiative and created fountains that transformed urban spaces from the Terraferma to the Stato da Mar into places of encounter and aesthetic delight. Finally, this lecture explores the afterlife of the Venetian wellhead. Speaker Patricia Fortini Brown is Professor Emerita at Princeton University and Director of Save Venice Inc.
