Film | The Shadow Circus: The CIA in Tibet (1998): Documentary

The Shadow Circus: The CIA in Tibet reveals a little-known aspect of Tibet’s recent history: the country’s armed struggle against the invading forces of Communist China. Contrary to the generally held preconception of a deeply religious and peace-loving people, the Tibetans fought a long and bloody – though ultimately, unsuccessful – guerrilla campaign. They were aided in their efforts by an unlikely ally, the CIA. Directors: Tenzing Sonam and Ritu Sarin 50 min.

Performance | Fish Out of Agua: Storytelling

Michele Carlo, a redheaded, freckle-faced Puerto Rican raised in an Italian/Irish Bronx neighborhood, grew up as a double-outsider: too “white” for some of her family and a mystery to nearly everyone else. By turns heartbreaking and hilarious, her search for identity unfolds like a runaway #6 train amid the backdrop of a long-gone New York City. Adapted from her 2010 memoir Fish Out Of Agua: My Life on Neither Side of the (Subway) Tracks. Dance Performance | 3 Site-Specific Dance Acts in the Heart of the City

This event is three site-specific commissions by luciana achugar, Laurie Berg, and Full Circle Souljahs (Ana "Rokafella" Garcia & Gabriel "Kwikstep" Dionisio). The artists will explore strategies for perception, amplification, and activism within the cacophonous landscape of the city. In New Mass Dance, achugar creates a site-specific procession inspired by the New Dance Group, a 1930s modern dance collective that taught classes near Times Square promoting social change through movement. In scape, Berg overlays a landscape of information over live performance via 3-D glasses, exploring Times Square as not just a place of spectacle and traffic but of visual messaging. Full Circle Souljahs' Behind the Groove is an homage to street and club dance trends from the '70s to today, giving visibility to an underground dance community long associated with Times Square. These three new works will be presented back-to-back so that audience goers can experience all three works on one evening or over the course of the weekend. 6pm: Laurie Berg 7pm: luciana achugar 8pm: Full Circle Souljahs Thursday-Sunday, September 20-23, 2018.
