Lecture | Language Politics and International Relations: A Controversy Over the New Ukrainian Education Law


When the Ukrainian parliament adopted a new law on education in September 2017, this development was more welcomed by civil society and Ukraine’s Western partners as an important part of the post-Euromaidan reform agenda. However, the new law provoked an outcry from neighboring states, particularly Hungary, as it drastically reduced the use of minority languages in the education process. Notwithstanding their warning that its implementation would jeopardize not only their country’s bilateral relations with Ukraine but also Ukraine’s European integration, President Poroshenko enacted the law, thus exacerbating the controversy. To understand why Kyiv supported a minority-insensitive law despite its predictable foreign policy repercussions, one should look at the domestic political context. Similarly, it is the domestic contexts of the respective kin-states that can shed light on their harsh response to Ukraine’s assertive move. Speaker Volodymyr Kulyk is a Head Research Fellow at the Institute of Political and Ethnic Studies, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. He has also taught at Columbia, Stanford and Yale Universities, Kyiv Mohyla Academy and Ukrainian Catholic University as well as having research fellowships at Harvard, Stanford, Woodrow Wilson Center, University College London, University of Alberta and other Western scholarly institutions. less

Focusing on the people, plants, and architecture of the park, this introductory course also covers basic more camera handling, composition, light, and subject matter. Bring your own camera. From Beaux Arts to glass towers, the architecture around the park reflects a rich procession from early NYC Deco skyscrapers to crystalline prisms such as the Bank of America tower. Working with New York-based architecture and landscape photographer Jade Doskow, students will learn about the history of the buildings around the park and then move onto a series of exercises in shooting architecture, making pictures both abstract and formal, focusing on the light upon the cityscape and the intertwining of the landscaping of the park with the structures around it. The 1962 novel is set in Greenwich Village, New York City, in the late 1950s. It portrayed many themes more that were taboo at the time of its release, including bisexuality, interracial couples and extramarital affairs. James Baldwin (1924-1987) was an American novelist and social critic. His essays, as collected in Notes of a Native Son (1955), explore intricacies of racial, sexual, and class distinctions in Western societies, most notably in mid-20th-century America. His unfinished manuscript, Remember This House, was expanded and adapted for cinema as the Academy Award-nominated documentary film I Am Not Your Negro. Lecture | Remaking Shores and Harbors


Laleh Khalili of the University of London will reflect on the processes of harbor-making that entail more the transformation of coasts, seashores, subsea contours, and the very shape and flow of the seas. Such transformations harm ecosystems near and far. For instance they entail sand-mining, concrete manufacture, and production of aggregates: sand is the most traded world commodity by volume, while the production of one ton of Portland cement produces around one ton of CO2. But harbors also influence social lives in ways that subtly play havoc with the environment in the long run. The lecture will specifically focus on the ports of the Persian Gulf, one of the shallowest seas in the world, and home to a variety of warm-water marine flora and fauna. less

Film | Alicia’s Hands: a documentary on the life of Spanish pianist Alicia de Larrocha


The film, which provides a portrait of a life devoted to the pursuit of musical perfection, features more André Previn, Maria João Pires, Martha Argerich, and Gerard Schwarz, among others, providing commentary on Ms. de Larrocha’s technique and her passionate approach to performance. In-person introductory remarks will be given at the screening by Alicia and Juan Torra, children of Ms. de Larrocha, whose “beautiful sound, amazing technique, and truly immaculate rhythm” (André Previn) has assured her place among the 20th century’s great pianists. less

Performance | Antigone in Ferguson: Sophocles and Choral Music


Antigone in Ferguson was conceived in the wake of Michael Brown’s death in 2014, through a collaboration more between Theater of War Productions and community members from Ferguson, Missouri. Translated and directed by Bryan Doerries and composed by Phil Woodmore, the project fuses a dramatic reading by leading actors of excerpts from Sophocles’s Greek tragedy with live choral music performed by a choir of activists, police officers, youth, and concerned citizens from Ferguson and New York City. The performance is the catalyst for panel and audience-driven discussions on race and social justice, the core component of the event. This multifaceted production will offer a glimpse not only into the effects of the tragedy in Brown’s local community, but also the trauma of police violence and racial injustice in communities of color in New York and across the nation. Local stakeholders and community leaders will participate as panelists, assisting in opening up dialogues with audiences. These guided discussions, which aim to promote healing and bridge the growing divide between law enforcement and local communities, will focus on the impact of racialized violence against communities of color, and the legacies of the tragic deaths of Michael Brown, as well as Eric Garner, Amadou Diallo, Sean Bell, Saheed Vassell, and numerous other victims. The presentation will feature a rotating roster of acclaimed actors, including Samira Wiley (The Handmaid’s Tale), who will reprise the role she portrayed in the premiere of Antigone in Ferguson presented on the stage of Michael Brown’s high school in Ferguson in 2016. Other cast members include: Paul Giamatti (Billions), Tamara Tunie (Law & Order: SVU), David Strathairn (Good Night, and Good Luck), Adepero Oduye (12 Years a Slave), Frankie Faison (The Wire) and Kathryn Erbe (Law & Order: Criminal Intent). Night Before the Funeral is a new Czech play, originally produced in 2017 by the Svanda Theatre in Prague. more A death in the family brings everybody home, but a brief peace is broken by family squabbles, politics, and life crises. The mother's new Iranian boyfriend and a spectacular public breakdown just increase the tensions. An examination of life, in all its complexity, in the modern Czech Republic. Untitled Theater Company #61 is a theater of Ideas: scientific, political, philosophical, and above all theatrical. Their shows mix tragedy and comedy in a manner inspired by classic absurdism, while often incorporating music, technology, and physical theater. Early defining events include their Havel Festival and Ionesco Festival, in which they produced their full works (with the participation and attendance of President Havel and with Ionesco’s daughter, Marie-France, respectively).
