Opening Reception | 2 Art Shows: Wide-Eyed and Open Mouthed / Confetti of the Mind

Wide-Eyed and Open-Mouthed is an exhibition of wall-mounted sculptural work by Daniel Wiener exploring the mask and face as motif. Widely recognized for his long career of abstract and often freestanding sculptures, Wiener has pivoted with this body of work to focus more on two-dimensional wall mounted Apoxie-Sculpt works using a process he developed while in the Workspace Program Residency at Dieu Donné in 2017. This will be Wiener’s fourth solo exhibition with the gallery. Confetti of the Mind is a solo exhibition of recent collage works by Paul Loughney. In this body of work, Loughney culls images from contemporary magazines—a source material he approaches as an anthropological document—and transforms through cut patterning, design, and layering into complex compositions of distorted fragments. “My intention is to create a sense of mystery or otherworldliness.” Loughney states. This manifests into abstract works consisting of layered imagery—that make use of repeated pattern and form—resulting in colorfully dynamic compositions set against a dark background.

Author Reading | Make, Think, Imagine: Engineering the Future of Civilization

Today's unprecedented pace of change leaves many people wondering what new technologies are doing to our lives. Are the decisions about our health, security and finances made by computer programs inexplicable and biased? Will these algorithms become so complex that we can no longer control them? Are robots going to take our jobs? Will better health care lead to an aging population which cannot be cared for? Can we provide housing for our ever-growing urban populations? And has our demand for energy driven the Earth's climate to the edge of catastrophe? With author John Browne.

Film | Battle For The Marble Palace: History Of The Supreme Court

The highest court in the land has long been a tug of war between left and right. Back in 1969, President Lyndon Johnson appointed Abe Fortas to succeed Chief Justice Earl Warren. Instead of a routine confirmation that would help cement LBJ's legacy, it ignited a war between liberals and conservatives eager to seize control of the judicial body. In Battle for the Marble Palace: Abe Fortas, Earl Warren, Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon and the Forging of the Modern Supreme Court Michael Bobelian provides a timely portrayal of the clash in this seminal moment in Court history, detailing the Machiavellian maneuvers to secure ideologically driven justices for a coming generation. Michael Bobelian, former research scholar at The New York Public Library, a lawyer covering the Supreme Court , and a contributing writer for Forbes, will be joined in conversation with Alicia Bannon, Managing Director of the Brennan Center's Democracy Program.
