Conference | Aligning Corporations with the Sustainable Development Goals


Interest in the private sector’s opportunities and responsibilities with respect to sustainable development more and human rights has exploded in recent years, reflected both in the rise of environment, social, and governance considerations in investment decisions as well as in the growth of voluntary initiatives and mandatory sustainability reporting by companies. This interest has only grown since the adoption of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda in 2015, which established 17 Sustainable Development Goals defining consensus areas needful of global action. And yet, real questions remain as to whether this increased recognition of the importance of non-financial variables has resulted or will result in sustainable and responsible corporate practices and improved outcomes on the ground. Indeed, the proliferation of sustainability initiatives and tools has coincided with a worsening of the world’s problems, including the climate crisis, water stress, deforestation, health crises and malnutrition epidemics, and extreme inequality, which have contributed to increased migration, insecurity, wars and terrorism. less

Classical Music | Bach at Noon


The organ works of J.S. Bach (1685-1750) offered in 30-minute meditations. Johann Sebastian Bach was more a German composer and musician of the Baroque period. He is known for instrumental compositions such as the Brandenburg Concertos and the Goldberg Variations as well as for vocal music such as the St. Matthew Passion and the Mass in B minor. Since the 19th-century Bach has been generally regarded as one of the greatest composers of all time. "The term 'baroque' has been widely used since the 19th century to describe the period in Western European art music from about 1600 to 1750... Many famous composers from the first part of the baroque period came from Italy and have a link with Venice, including Claudio Monteverdi and Antonio Vivaldi. Monteverdi was born in Cremona, but moved to Venice where he was 'maestro di capella' at the San Marco basilica. Vivaldi was born in Venice and was one of the greatest baroque composers. It is thanks to these strong musical traditions of Venice that we have today's music. Without Venetian church music and Monteverdi's advances with polyphony, the great traditions of choral music in England, France, and Germany would never have developed. Without the operas written by Monteverdi, Cavalli and Vivaldi, not only would the later styles of opera never have been invented. There would be no basis for the American Musical or the German and Viennese Operetta, the Spanish Zarzuela, and even rock, pop, and contemporary music as we know it." The Venice Insider Bach at Noon concerts take place every Tuesdays through Fridays, from September 10, 2019 to May 20, 2020. less

Examples of writings with strong regional gothic elements will be examined There will be talks with established NYC artists from various mediums whose work draws heavily on regional gothic themes.  Each student will create, craft and edit one piece of short fiction. This conference, the third annual of its kind, will build upon the last two years of diplomatic efforts more to promote the Global Pact and discuss opportunities to strengthen international environmental governance. This conference focuses on the ability of a Global Pact for the Environment, which aims to unify international environmental governance and codify a human right to the environment in international law, to support the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, including by linking the 2030 Agenda to the international environmental legal system. Specifically, the conference will explore potential connections between 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Global Pact for the Environment, touching upon opportunities for mutual reinforcement and considering priority provisions for Global Pact negotiators to include to maximize impact. During the first half of the twentieth century, songwriters such as Harold Arlen, Irving Berlin, Dorothy more Fields, George and Ira Gershwin, and Thomas "Fats" Waller flourished in New York City, the home of Tin Pan Alley, Broadway, and Harlem. Their music was quintessentially American at heart and in time would be known as the Great American Songbook. In City Songs and American Life, 1900-1950, author and broadcaster Michael Lasser offers an evocative and probing account of the popular songs that America heard, sang, and danced to from the early decades of the century through the Roaring Twenties, the Great Depression, and finally World War II. Author Reading | The Shadow King: During The Italian Invasion In Ethiopia


Maaza Mengiste, author of Beneath the Lion's Gaze, returns to another piece of Ethiopian history, this more time the 1935 Italian invasion of her native country. Though she grew up hearing her grandfather’s male-centric stories of the war, Mengiste chose a multiplicity of perspectives—women and men, poor and rich, powerless and powerful, to imagine the conflict from all sides.  In a preface, Mengiste describes how her great-grandmother was passed over to receive the gun that would represent her family in battle. Her father gave it to her husband instead, at which point the great-grandmother sued to get it back. When she won the case, she enlisted and went to war, like so many other women, whose stories have been left out of the historical record. In The Shadow King Mengiste restores their narrative by recounting the many roles that women play during wartime: caregivers, as well as advisers, spies, and warriors.  Booker Prize–winning novelist Marlon James joins Mengiste for a conversation about reimagining history and the event that reshaped her nation.  less
