Musical | The Big Time: A Cold War Musical

A new musical comedy from the author of Broadway’s Sister Act, Cinderella, and Xanadu. It’s the height of the Cold War when Russian spies take over an ocean liner holding all of NATO. Leave it to lounge singers on board to save the day by teaching the communists to put down their Kalashnikovs and pick up singing, dancing, and comedy. The war is cold but the numbers are hot in this show with a ring-a-ding score that might just bring back the Rat Pack. A student production. Play | To Life: Meet the Rosens

The Rosen family, battered and blessed, celebrates Jeffrey’s life as their hearts lie gasping on the floor. Backs are turned and accusations hurled as the Rosens come together and fall apart, bound by heartbreak and humor. Nobody escapes a good kick in the tuchas as they expose their foibles, confront their fears, and cling to their fragile connection amidst the chaos. The story is both elegy and eulogy to the death of a family and reminds us that we’re not alone. Written by Eve Lederman.

Author Reading | Silenced by Sound: The Music Meritocracy Myth

Ian Brennan's Silenced by Sound is a powerful exploration of the challenges facing art, music, and media in the digital era. With his fifth book, Brennan delves deep into his personal story to address the inequity of distribution in the arts globally. Brennan challenges music industry tycoons by skillfully demonstrating that there are millions of talented people around the world far more gifted than the superstars for whom billions of dollars are spent to promote the delusion that they have been blessed with unique genius.

Discussion | Digital Sanctuary Cities: Surveillance, Immigration, and Protecting Black Dissent (virtual)

While the borders of the US are often conceived as clear lines, in reality they manifest as a labyrinth of agencies, individuals, and surveillance technologies. Border surveillance encompasses numerous technologies: US Customs and Border Protection drones can observe the majority of American homes, flying anywhere within 100 miles of a land border or coast; immigrants awaiting court dates are forced to wear electronic GPS shackles; conceits for a physical border wall increasingly give way to plans for an invisible wall of surveillance; and more. The speakers in this conversation will explain the variety of individual surveillance technologies used by Department of Homeland Security agencies, and how these technologies directly impact immigrant and BIPOC communities, as well as everyone living within the US. Featuring Jacinta Gonzalez, Carin Kuoni, and Mizue Aizeki, moderated by Myaisha Hayes.
