Tour | Tour of Gracie Mansion, Home of New York's Mayors

In 1799, a prosperous New York merchant named Archibald Gracie built a country house overlooking a bend in the East River, five miles north of the then-New York City limits. Little did he know that, more than 200 years later, his home would be serving as the official residence of the First Family of New York City - a place where history is made, not merely recorded. As a historic house museum run by the Parks Department, sitting on 11 acres of grounds now known as Carl Schurz Park, Gracie Mansion has served as the home of 10 mayors, beginning first with Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia in 1942. Today, Gracie Mansion is occupied by the de Blasio family, which has opened its doors in the spirit of the administration's motto: one city, rising together. In keeping with that theme, Mayor de Blasio and First Lady Chirlane McCray have introduced a new art installation, titled “Windows on the City: Looking Out at Gracie’s New York.” This tour repeats every Monday.

Author Reading | Leftover in China: The Women Shaping the World's Next Superpower

Factory Girls meets The Vagina Monologues in this fascinating narrative on China's single women-and why they could be the source of its economic future. Forty years ago, China enacted the one-child policy, only recently relaxed. Among many other unintended consequences, it resulted in both an enormous gender imbalance-with a predicted twenty million more men than women of marriage age by 2020-and China's first generations of only-daughters. Given the resources normally reserved for boys, these girls were pushed to study, excel in college, and succeed in careers, as if they were sons. Roseanne Lake is The Economist's Cuba correspondent. She was previously based in Beijing, where she spent time as a television reporter and journalist. Her China coverage has appeared in Foreign Policy, The Atlantic, Salon and Vice, among others.

Author Reading | I've Seen the Future and I'm Not Going: The Art Scene and Downtown New York in the 1980s

Brilliantly funny, frank, and shattering, this is the bittersweet memoir by Peter McGough of his life with artist David McDermott. Set in New York's Lower East Side of the 1980s and mid-1990s, it is also a devastatingly candid look at the extreme naivete and dysfunction that would destroy both their lives.

Things scarcely got any better for the ensuing six years--they were baseball's laughingstock. Author Wayne Coffey as he talks about the year all that changed: 1969. Classical Music | Honoring Clara Schumann: A Bicentennial Celebration

Celebrate the 200th birthday of Clara Schumann (born in September 1819, in Leipzig, Germany) with a program of her works and those of her husband, Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms, and Felix Mendelssohn. The relationship of Clara and Robert Schumann is one of the greatest romances in the world of classical music. It is a complicated story celebrating music, the role of muse, and love and marriage. Music was at the center of their relationship and their respect for and support of one another can be felt throughout their compositions. Their strong relationship and collaboration also influenced many of their friends and colleagues, especially fellow composers. Two such composers were Johannes Brahms (who became Clara's life-long friend and artistic collaborator) and Felix Mendelssohn. About the performers: Rebecca Grady Rucker (soprano) is equally comfortable on the opera and concert hall stage and has performed extensively throughout the New York and New Jersey area. In opera and musical theatre, her most recent role was that of Gianetta in The Gondoliers with the Blue Hill Troupe. Brent Funderburk (piano) is being praised for his sensitive and nuanced accompanying, and hailed as one of the most promising collaborative pianists in the industry. Equally at home in opera, art song, instrumental repertoire, and vocal coaching, Brent Funderburk is known across the country as a respected recitalist, coach, and music director.
