Book Discussion | Researchers Remember: Research as an Arena of Memory Among Descendants of Holocaust Survivors, a Collected Volume of Academic Autobiographies (online)

For descendants of Holocaust survivors who became researchers and scholars, whether they devoted their professional lives to the Holocaust or to other topics, the Holocaust often accompanies their professional lives like a shadow. This new book discusses this phenomenon through the stories of 30 researchers, children and grandchildren of Holocaust survivors. It is the first book of its kind, and the Museum is pleased to host a discussion with editors and contributors. Presented by Judy Tydor Baumel-Schwartz and Shmuel Refael, editors of Researchers Remember. Together with Jacqueline Heller, Dan Carter, Dorota Glowacka, Sam Juni, Abraham J. Peck, Liat Steir-Livny, Zehavit Gross, and Eva Fogelman, they will discuss how their parents' or grandparents' Holocaust experiences affected their personal and professional trajectories.

Author Reading | Sojourn: Troubled in Berlin

In Amit Chaudhuri's novel, an Indian writer has come to Berlin as a visiting professor. This is his second sojourn in the city, which seems strange, and also strangely familiar, to him. He is disoriented by its names, its immensity, and its history; he is worried that something may happen to him there. Sojourn is a dramatic and disconcerting work of fiction, a book about the present as it slips into the past, a picture of a city and of a troubled mind, a historical novel about an ostensibly post-historical time, a story of haunting. Here, as in his earlier work, Chaudhuri pries open fictional form to explore questions of public and private life in ways that are both bold and subtle.
