Concert | DJ Plays World Music: Listening Session Outdoors


From 1947 to 1968, free public listening events in Bryant Park offered access to the growing record library more of discs donated by record labels like Columbia and Decca. It was among the first listening events of its kind - drawing an average of 2,000 visitors to the park on weekdays. Today the "record library" contains over 700,000 recordings. In the spirit of those listening sessions, enjoy Sound Bites, a series of outdoor djed events on select Fridays throughout the summer. The series will feature DJs who will spin from the record library's vast collection and talk about their digging process. less

Considering Matthew Shepard (2016) is a three-part fusion oratorio about Matthew Shepard, a young gay victim of a brutal hate crime of 1998, who became a symbol for hope and empowerment, inspiring plays, documentaries and books. This moving work weaves together musical styles that include gospel, chant, country and western with lyrics taken from Matt Shepard's personal journal, writings from his parents, newspaper reports, and poetic texts. "Powerfully cathartic, it leads us from horror and grief to a higher understanding of the human condition," wrote the Washington Post. Proof of vaccination is required for all attendees ages 5 and older, masks must be worn at all times. less

Classical Music | String Quartet Performs Works by Mexican Composers


Momenta quartet dives into the fascinating and under-explored world of historic Mexican composers. They more will perform Julián Carrillo’s String Quartet No. 1 (1903) - one of his most ambitious large-scale tonal compositions, giving a glimpse into the composer’s style before his groundbreaking foray into microtonality. Also on the program will be an usual high-modernist offering from one of Mexico’s most widely celebrated composers, Carlos Chávez and Moncayo’s Sonata for Viola and Piano (1934), which is believed to be the first composition by a Mexican composer featuring the viola. Momenta Quartet has premiered over 150 works, collaborated with over 200 living composers and was praised by The New York Times for its "diligence, curiosity and excellence." The music piece is about Matthew Shepard, a young gay victim of a brutal hate crime of 1998, who became a symbol for hope and empowerment, inspiring plays, documentaries and books. This moving work weaves together musical styles that include gospel, chant, country and western with lyrics taken from Matt Shepard's personal journal, writings from his parents, newspaper reports, and poetic texts. "Powerfully cathartic, it leads us from horror and grief to a higher understanding of the human condition," wrote the Washington Post. Stage directors Elliott Forest and Rod Caspers, music director Malcolm J. Merriweather, and producer Melissa Baker will discuss the vision behind the venue's rendition of Considering Matthew Shepard, moderated by activist Cathy Renna, who was on the ground in Laramie immediately following the discovery of Matt's beating and who has worked with the family ever since. Renna currently serves as communications director of the National LGBTQ Task Force. less
