Lecture | Journey into the Unknown: The World of Modern Spoken Yiddish

Sunday, October 10, 2010, 2:00 pm

$5

Linguist Zelda Kahan Newman will be the guest speaker. Many Yiddish speakers of today look different and speak differently from the immigrant speakers of the turn of the 20th century. Today’s Yiddish speakers – the ones whose children converse among themselves in Yiddish – are overwhelmingly Hasidim. Yet the Yiddish spoken by Hasidim is not the same Yiddish that is studied and taught in academic settings and courses aimed at Yiddish learners. Professor Kahan Newman will explain how she found Hasidic speakers who were willing to be her informants. She will share what she learned about the changes in contemporary spoken Yiddish and show how listening to modern native speakers is like watching a language grapple with its linguistic neighbors.

Kahan Newman is a linguist who specializes in Yiddish, the language and its culture. She is Professor of Languages and Literatures at Lehman College (CUNY) and serves as faculty advisor to the newly resuscitated Hillel. When she lived in Israel, she helped found a women’s support center for victims of violence in Beer Sheva. She received certification to be a yoetset halacha (female halachic advisor for women) and was elected to the Academy for Awarding Prizes in Theater.
