Lecture | The History Of Cartography

Thursday, May 2, 2019, 6:30 pm

Free

From prehistoric Europe to the 20th century, societies have employed the principles of mapping in various forms. Dr. Matthew Edney, professor of geography and the Osher professor in the history of cartography at Southern Maine University, discusses his years of research that produced six volumes on cartography and how it has been practiced around the world through the ages.

Under Dr. Edney’s leadership, The History of Cartography Project, a research, editorial, and publishing venture that treats maps as cultural artifacts, has drawn international attention for its monumental vision and scope. Prepared for both the scholarly and lay audiences, the resulting multi-volume History of Cartography series offers the interpretive structure necessary to assess, appreciate, and analyze maps from all periods and cultures. Hear from the visionary researcher himself, and learn about his extensive efforts to re-frame the thinking mechanism on the history of cartography and the history of mapping.
