Lecture | CANCELLED***The Risks of Internationalized Conflict in the Caucasus: Sources of Overspill, Escalation and Stabilization***CANCELLED

THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED. In the twenty-five years since the end of the Soviet Union, the Caucasus more region (north and south Caucasus) has played a defining role in shaping security and political dynamics across the wider Euro-asia region. The conflicts of the Caucasus have been at the centre of these developments. Drawing on a three year study into the dynamics of armed conflict across the region in the post-Soviet period, the research presented here highlights growing interlinkages between the region's conflicts, the emergence of a Caucasus regional conflict and security complex, and a 'breakout' of conflict from the region into neighbouring conflicts in Syria/Middle East and Ukraine/Black Sea. With the conflicts of the Caucasus increasingly interlinked with wider security developments, the presentation will consider where the risks of conflict escalation lie and sources of stabilisation that might be reinforced to prevent further deterioration of security in the region. Speaker Neil Melvin is Director of Studies at the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI). At SIPRI, Dr. Melvin is also responsible for work on Russia and the Euro-asia region, with a particular focus on security and conflict issues in the Caucasus and the Black Sea region. less
