Lecture | The Structural Dynamics of Groups and Roles in Early Adolescent Friendship Networks


A fundamental aspect of school life rests on the collective substructures of peer networks. This talk more examines two intersecting substructures here: peer groups defined as dense communities of close friends and role positions, defined on the local pattern of ties one is embedded within, which are globally aligned by the school status structure. Combined, these two dimensions define the social field of a school for adolescents. Despite intense policy interest in “peer pressure” and theoretical interests in generalizations of fields, there is little basic descriptive information on the life-history of these key social network substructures in real-world networks, in part due to lack of available data and appropriate methods. Here, we describe the dynamics of groups and roles in dynamic data on 6 waves of peer network data in a way that lets us see the simultaneous emergence of behavior homophily and status stability. Screening | Edgar Allan Poe: Buried Alive: Exclusive Pre-Broadcast Showing of PBS Documentary


After his death, writer Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) became a global icon of modern literature and a pop more culture brand. Best known for his Gothic horror tales and narrative poem “The Raven,” Poe’s stories are the basis of countless films and TV episodes, and have inspired even more, as has his name and image. At least four American cities claim this literary legend as their own – Baltimore, Richmond, Philadelphia and New York: an NFL football team is named after one of his poems, and his image appears on everything from the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album cover to lunchboxes, bobbleheads and socks. Creating the detective fiction genre with “The Murders in the Rue Morgue” (1841), Poe wrote over 100 short stories and poems altogether, beginning with Tamerlane and Other Poems (1827), his first published work. Written and directed by Eric Stange (The War That Made America, American Experience: Murder at Harvard), the new documentary American Masters – Edgar Allan Poe: Buried Alive draws on the rich palette of Poe’s evocative imagery and sharply drawn plots to tell the real story of the notorious author. less

Talk | From Street Photography to a Successfully Published Book


Three years ago, L.A. based photographer Dotan Saguy started a casual street photography project in his more hometown. Over time the project morphed into a rich photo documentary about the culture of Venice Beach and is about to be published as a monograph by one of the most prestigious German art book publishers: Kehrer Verlag (Martin Parr, Bruce Gilden, Saul Leiter). In this presentation Saguy will show his street and documentary work while explaining how the project evolved over time and how he found a great publisher. There are great lessons here for anyone with an idea for a long term project, whether you haven’t started yet or are already in the middle of it. Saguy will offer tips and inspiration to help you turn your project into a reality. Saguy will also share his techniques for capturing raw, candid street moments with a digital Leica rangefinder. less

The film offers a fearless look at the growing Latino presence in the United States, bringing the U.S. attempts at territorial expansion and commercial advancement into the immigration narrative. The film screening will be followed by a discussion with Ann Stoler (Professor of Anthropology and History), Alyshia Galvez (Director of CUNY’s Mexican Studies Institute), and the social justice organization Make the Road NYC to talk about postcolonial legacies across the Americas, and ways of contesting the contemporary border landscape as engaged scholars and activists. Film | A Strange Film for Strange Times: The Many Lives of Leo Hurwitz’s Strange Victory


Leo Hurwitz’s Strange Victory (1948) was made during a time when critique of American society was seen more as bordering on treason. Now, almost 70 years after the film premiered, it has lost none of its topicality. Collaging nonfiction materials, newsreel footage, and Hurwitz’s own brilliantly-staged scenes, the film examines the meaning of victory over Hitler for U.S. society. America may have won the war, but why, the film asks, “in the country of the victors, [are] the ideas of the defeated still in fashion?” The film was beautifully restored by Milestone Films from producer Barney Rosset’s original 1948 nitrate interpositive. Milestone Films' co-founders, Dennis Doros and Amy Heller, will introduce the film, speaking about their experiences with Rosset, the preservation process, and a brief conclusion that Hurwitz added to the film in the 1960s. Cinema Studies PhD Candidate Tanya Goldman will also discuss the film’s curious distribution history. less

The key to providing access to hikers and daytrippers alike are the high-quality trail maps for parks produced by the Trail Conference. This is a public talk with cartographer Jeremy Apgar on the history of trail mapping in the region over the past 100 years, how maps are made today, and why Trail Conference maps are considered the gold standard for trail maps in the region, and beyond. Golden Globe-winning actor Richard Gere reads from the new translation of Italo Calvino's The Baron in more the Trees (1957, 2017 translation by Ann Goldstein). Cosimo di Rondó, a young Italian nobleman of the eighteenth century, rebels against his parents by climbing into the trees and remaining there for the rest of his life. He adapts efficiently to an existence in the forest canopy—he hunts, sows crops, plays games with earth-bound friends, fights forest fires, solves engineering problems, and even manages to have love affairs. From his perch in the trees, Cosimo sees the Age of Enlightenment pass by and a new century dawn. The Baron in the Trees exemplifies Calvino’s peerless ability to weave tales that sparkle with enchantment. Why do birds sing? Could we call what they sing and how they sing music? Of all nonhuman animals, birds more teach us to check anthropocentrism in music, or, as David Rothenberg puts it in Why Birds Sing (2005), birds check “the conceit that humanity is needed to find beauty in the natural world.” But how do they learn songs? Do they invent and compose them or “parrot” what they hear? Lecture | Denaturalizing French Nationals under the Vichy Regime


One of the first measures taken by the Vichy government, the law of July 22nd, 1940, intended to give more France back to the French. It organized the denaturalization of all French nationals naturalized since 1927. Hundreds of thousands of people were targeted by the law—Jews chiefly among them, even if the law did not explicitly mention them. Drawing from a large archival investigation, Claire Zalc’s Dénaturalisés, les retraits de nationalité sous Vichy examines how the magistrates of the committee that revised naturalizations made their decisions, how prefects and mayors implemented their instructions, how people stripped from French nationality were impacted, and how they responded. Lecture | Family, Status, and Individuality in Early Korean Photography


In the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910), representation of individual and social identity took limited forms more and channels, mostly of official portraits of the male elite. Commoners, women, and children were only pictured in highly stereotyped manners through genre and anecdotal paintings. Photography, introduced to Korea in the late 19th century, presented one's social and familial identity in a radically different way. This lecture will read some early photographs of Korean men, women, and children of both elite and non-elite families. These photographs unintentionally reveal the changing social and family dynamics of the late 19th century Korea; furthermore, they ask the question of individuality.
