Film | Alfred Hitchcock's The 39 Steps (1935): Classic Spy Thriller Film

The 39 Steps follows Richard Hannay as he stumbles upon a conspiracy that thrusts him into a hectic chase across the Scottish moors—a chase in which he is both the pursuer and the pursued—as well as into an unexpected romance with the cool Pamela. Adapted from a novel by John Buchan, this classic wrong-man thriller from the Master of Suspense anticipates the director’s most famous works (especially North by Northwest), and remains one of his cleverest and most entertaining films. Director: Alfred Hitchcock Cast: Robert Donat, Madeleine Carroll, Lucie Mannheim, Godfrey Tearle Alfred Hitchcock was an English filmmaker who is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in the history of cinema. In a career spanning six decades, he directed over 50 feature films, many of which are still widely watched and studied today. Known as the "Master of Suspense," he became as famous as any of his actors thanks to his many interviews, his cameo roles in most of his films, and his hosting and producing the television anthology Alfred Hitchcock Presents (1955-65). His films garnered 46 Academy Award nominations, including six wins, although he never won the award for Best Director despite five nominations.

Author Reading | Social Anthropologist Discusses Her New Book about Jewish Community in Ukraine (In Person AND Online!)

Enjoy a book talk by social anthropologist Marina Sapritsky-Naum on her new nonfiction work, Jewish Odesa: Negotiating Identities and Tradition in Contemporary Ukraine, moderated by Mark Andyczyk. This groundbreaking work examines the complex and evolving identities of Jewish community in Odesa, Ukraine’s historic port city, as they navigate cultural revival, historical continuity, and the profound disruptions brought by the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Drawing on over two decades of research and fieldwork, including experiences during pivotal moments such as the 2013-2014 Maidan protests and the 2022 Russian invasion, Sapritsky-Naum provides an in-depth look at how Jewish Odesans are redefining their sense of belonging.  Jewish Odesa examines the significant changes faced by Jewish communities following Ukraine’s independence, tracing the tension between historical Russian influences and the rise of Ukrainian nationalism. The book also highlights personal narratives of individuals, families, and communities, offering readers a poignant understanding of how Jewish Odesans are coping with the existential threats posed by the ongoing war, including the mass displacement of Jewish populations.

Screening | October in Paris (1962): French Documentary about Algeria (with Discussion)

Octobre à Paris, directed by Jacques Panijel, was one of the first attempts to break a silence about colonial violence in Algeria, weaving together first hand testimonies, archival documents, and reconstructed scenes to bear witness to a tragedy the authorities sought to erase. On the night of October 17, 1961, Parisian police brutally repressed a peaceful demonstration of Algerians protesting France’s colonial war in Algeria. Dozens were killed while the French state imposed a strict silence on the massacre. Completed in 1962, Octobre à Paris was immediately banned by French censors, and it would take over a decade for the ban to be lifted. Today, Panijel’s film stands as a landmark of militant cinema and a courageous act of historical memory. Screening followed by a discussion with Professor of French and Comparative Literature at Columbia Madeleine Dobie, author Nicole Wallenbroek, and doctoral student Jihad Azahrai. French with English subtitles.

Concert | Eastern European-Inspired Improv/Jazz/Folk Fusion Music

Ana Everling and her Chicago-based quartet make their New York debut. Rooted in Eastern European folk traditions and shaped by improvisation, jazz, and experimental sound, Ana leads the ensemble with voice, looping, and live effects, setting ancient vocal textures against contemporary sonic treatments. Featuring Matt Gold on acoustic guitars, Hunter Diamond on woodwinds and percussion, and Kenny Reichert on electric guitar, the group explores a wide dynamic range--from ritual-inspired minimalism to lush, layered improvisation. For ages 12+. There are two ways to access this event: 1. General Admission, first-come first-served. Just show up! 2. Fast Track opening the Monday before the event at noon.
