Tour | Dance Theater Workshop Exhibition Tour

Take a tour of Room to Move: Dance Theater Workshop and Alternative Histories of Downtown Dance, an exhibition about how Dance Theater Workshop grew from a need for space into a lasting model of support for artists. Dance Theater Workshop provided not only space to create, but also offered classes and professional development for artists, subsidized video recordings of performances, and gave artists administrative support. For many individual artists, it was the first time that they did not have to manage every aspect of a production by themselves, and this freed up time for creativity and experimentation. Over time, Dance Theater Workshop became a crucial venue for artists in the downtown scene. A number of choreographers now well known all over the world, including Mark Morris, Donald Byrd, Bebe Miller, and Bill T. Jones, all got their start at the Dance Theater Workshop. Dance Theater Workshop also provided funds and initiatives that helped these artists travel and exhibit their work outside of New York, and brought regional artists to the city. We also have them to thank for the Bessie Awards, which recognize outstanding and groundbreaking creative work by independent dance artists in New York City. This tour requires no registration, and is first come, first served.

Workshop | Midtown Photography Workshop: Shoot with Flash Like a Pro

Are you afraid of flash? Do you break into a cold sweat when someone mentions sync speed? Do you think “HSS” stands for “Help, Send Snacks”? Then this is the workshop for you! JC Carey of Westcott and JCPhotoMedia - a man who believes the only thing brighter than a properly exposed portrait is a student having an aha moment—takes attendees on a hands-on photowalk through the dazzling chaos of Midtown Manhattan. Along the way, you’ll harness the power of Westcott Lighting gear and conquer the dark art (okay, well-lit art) of High-Speed Sync Flash Photography. This isn’t your grandma’s photography class—unless she’s a lighting nerd too, in which case, bring her along. JC will walk you through the basics of HSS with equal parts knowledge, enthusiasm, and questionable jokes. You’ll learn how to overpower the sun, shoot wide open in the middle of the day, and stop motion like a photography ninja. Bonus points if you do it without dropping your camera in Times Square. Whether you're just starting out or still think the pop-up flash is a good idea (spoiler: it’s not), this class will help you ditch the fear and shoot with flash like a pro. Bring your camera. Bring your curiosity. Leave your fear at home. Because after this walk, you won’t just take flash photos—you’ll make ‘em sing.

Classical Music | Minimalist Music Suite Exploring Freedom & Structure: New York Premiere

A New York premiere and co-production between AMOC* and Sandbox Percussion, Dutch composer Simeon ten Holt's Canto Ostinato feels like the long-lost cousin of beloved American Minimalist works like Steve Reich's Music for 18 Musicians or Terry Riley's In C. Encountering it for the first time is like meeting an unknown relative--you're struck by uncanny resemblances: the tilt of a nose, the rhythm of a laugh, echoes that stretch across time and space. With AMOC* members Matthew Aucoin, Conor Hanick, and Jonny Allen alongside Sandbox, Canto Ostinato radiates the warmth, spaciousness, and quiet luminosity of the best minimalist music. It offers both freedom and structure: a world shaped by softly chiming pulses and deeply satisfying harmonic shifts, where performers navigate personal interpretation within a familiar framework. For some, the piece may evoke the stillness of sacred music; for others, it feels like an invitation to collective meditation. Beloved in the Netherlands, where it premiered, Canto Ostinato holds a universal appeal that invites discovery far beyond its homeland--its patient, shifting light promises to resonate just as profoundly with audiences everywhere. There are two ways to access this event: 1. General Admission, first-come first-served. Just show up! 2. Fast Track opening the Monday before the event at noon.
