He created the Anticorruption Foundation, which served as an umbrella movement and organization of investigators uncovering the corruption of the top Kremlin officials. His documentary about Putin’s luxurious palace on the shore of the Black Sea has gotten 180 million views. Talk | Irish Jewry through the Ages: Part One (1079-1892) (online)

Uncover the roots of Jewish life in Ireland from the medieval era through the 19th century. This three-part series delves into the rich history of Jews in Ireland, from their earliest recorded presence in 1079 CE to the evolving Irish-Jewish experience of the 21st century. This session traces the early Jewish presence in Ireland, from its first mention in 1079 to the establishment of Dublin's Jewish community in 1892. Key moments include the medieval protections under Henry III, the 1290 expulsion, and the eventual reintegration of Jews under Cromwell, alongside the rise of Dublin's "Little Jerusalem." Explore how these events shaped a unique Irish-Jewish identity, contextualized through my own family's multi-generational story.

Lecture | The Lives of the Socialist Literary Journal: Embedded Modes of Independent Culture under State Socialism

In the Soviet Union and socialist Eastern Europe, literary journals enjoyed remarkable popularity. They not only provided access to sensational works of literature but figured as visually appealing objects and social events in everyday life. Against the background of the supposedly isolated and monolithic cultures of twentieth-century state socialism, they are often described through metaphors such as “windows to the world,” “islands of freedom,” or sites of “permitted dissent.” But what if this cultural form and institution is not an exception within its larger context but, rather, an essential and firmly integrated element? The methodological lens of periodical studies—the combined analysis of visual, literary, and social dimensions of journals—reveals socialist culture from an alternative angle. The synthetic mode of analysis, including the distant reading of the journals’ data, offers a different vision of freedoms and limitations in cultural production. This lecture focuses on several case studies from the 1960s and 1970s in the USSR and Czechoslovakia, especially the two journals Inostrannaia literatura (Moscow) and Světová literatura (Prague). Inasmuch as these periodicals continue precedents from the early 20-th century, the lecture argues, they provide models for independent and participatory modes of cultural production and reception that are an essential feature of East European socialism. Speaker Philip Tuxbury-Gleissner is an assistant professor in the Department of Slavic and East European Languages and Cultures at Ohio State.

Film | The Basement Talks: Documentary, Six Women Who Couldn't Disagree More

In 1994, a gunman walked into two Massachusetts abortion facilities and opened fire, killing two staff members and injuring five people. The public outrage in response to this violent tragedy and the subsequent trial was overwhelming, as both the pro-life and pro-choice movements vigorously cast blame, shame, and fierce vitriol on one another. The Basement Talks asks, What do you do with a problem you can't solve alone, but is so divisive - fatally divisive - you can't seem to solve it in community, either? Recognizing the danger and hostility of the rhetoric used on both sides and determined to work to put an end to the violence, the Governor of Massachusetts and the Cardinal of Boston came together to call for dialogue. Their initiative resulted in six women - all leaders in their own communities, and each on very different sides of the debate - meeting secretly in a windowless basement. They were only supposed to meet four times; they met for nearly six years.. This gripping documentary explores how their simple yet significant willingness to engage and foster civil dialogue created understanding and diffused the hate that had become so prevalent.

Screening | Restoring Memory: East Asian Narratives in Non-Fiction Shorts

Marking the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, Restoring Memory: East Asian Narratives in Non-Fiction Shorts, showcases three non-fiction essay films by Kyuri Jeon, Lee Kai-Chung, and Changmin Lee that explore the layered interplay of history, memory, and identity in East Asia's wartime legacies. The three selected films examine the migrating and displaced bodies and locate memories in embodied experiences, artifacts, and affects. Employing diverse experimental filmmaking methods--engaging public and familial archives, carrying out ethnographic fieldwork, and reenacting historical temporalities--these films critically address global colonial histories, inter-Asian militarism, and bodily and psyche manifestations of ideological conflicts. Together, these works constellate a reimagination of East Asia as a site of historical flux, exposing East Asia's internal entanglements with larger geopolitical forces while recentering local memories and subjectivities within its dynamic cultural and historical landscapes. This program is an effort to foster dialogue and reimagine "Asianness" and its dynamic cultural contexts through the evolving praxes of non-fiction filmmaking.
