Dance Performance | Interactive Dance Performance and Installation

Brian Lobel's Hold My Hand and We're Halfway There, uses four televisions, 12 headsets, a sturdy bed and 100 classic musicals to explore issues of isolation, community, secret pleasures and the age-old question, When are you alone? And when are you lonely? Every day from 9am-5pm for 5 days – the equivalent of a 40hr work week – Brian Lobel will dance nonstop in his bedroom, inviting any and all passersby to join him, to dance with him, to watch a musical film of their choice or to simply stand inside and watch. The piece links Depression-era dance marathons, where contestants danced until they dropped in pursuit of fame and fortune, to young boys dancing in their bedroom after school, where they too dance until they drop, often hoping for fame and fortune. The piece is both fun and frightening, exhausting and exhilarating and a reflection on loneliness, labor, and labors of love. Because the performance is durational, audience members can come and go at any time and stay for as long as they choose.

Concert | Listen to “The Auerglass,” a two-person pump organ

The Auerglass is a two-person wooden pump organ designed by the artist Tauba Auerbach with her friend Cameron Mesirow of the band Glasser. The instrument cannot be played alone. It requires two people to play. One player has to pump in order for the other to play and vice versa. There is a four-octave scale that is divided so that each of the two players plays every other note. Auerbach and Mesirow will play a composition written specifically for the instrument. It combines music that Auerbach wrote as a child, songs from Glasser and new material. Ida Falck Øien, who creates the costumes for Glasser, has created special costumes with shifting states for the Auerglass players to wear.

Performance | performance installation: COVERS

Three wearable sculptures, handmade of mostly recycled synthetic materials using classic crochet techniques and connected into one large crocheted sculpture, will be entered, separated and transformed into evolving images by performers Carrie Ahern, Jillian Hollis and Agata Oleksiak. The performance installation will raise questions of how one's own desires are projected onto the static objects one sees in store windows and investigate how our desires shift when the objects become live women, both moving and changing the shape of the objects, and vulnerable to the audience's gaze. What is the residual relationship to the objects once disinhabited by the performers and left as a new static installation?

Opening Reception | 2 Solos Shows: Jon Pestoni / Zak Prekop

Neither figurative, nor purely abstract, Jon Pestoni’s paintings are imbued with an experiential quality. They highlight paint application, materiality, rich color schemes, and occasionally, blunt, aggressive brushwork. His work is explicit and avoids visual pretense in a direct, immediate way. Scale and color shift subtly from work to work, revealing the internal logic of Pestoni’s practice and contextualizing each individual painting. Pestoni lives and works in Los Angeles. His paintings were included in The White Columns New York Annual 2008. His work has also been exhibited in New York at Leo Koenig Inc and Marianne Boesky Gallery as well as at Galerie Parisa Kind in Frankfurt, Germany. Zak Prekop’s paintings are notable for their levels of refinement, interiority and sincerity. Even in his larger canvases, the artist conjures an intimate experience for the viewer. Prekop creates a new form of subdued and cerebral non-representational painting. Prekop lives and works in Chicago. He has recently exhibited at Shane Campbell Gallery in Chicago and Roger Björkholmen Galleri, Stockholm, Sweden.

Opening Reception | Michael Patterson-Carver: Drawings

Patterson-Carver’s drawings are a candid and direct look at the political realm, dividing into two distinct genres: those that represent well-known world leaders and power mongers, and others that represent ordinary men and women, working for change through direct action and demonstrations. The latter are always gently smiling, standing shoulder to shoulder, their collective mass filling the picture plane, topped by placards voicing their demands, hopes and desires. They smile because, according to Patterson-Carver, they are quite sure of their success. Patterson-Carver is a self-taught artist, born 1958 in Chicago, and currently homeless in the Los Angeles area. Inspired by childhood exposure to the civil rights movement, he has been a lifelong activist and considers himself a political refugee. Since 2007, Patterson-Carver has had solo exhibitions at White Columns, New York; Small A Projects, Portland, OR; and Sorry We’re Closed in Brussels. In 2008, Patterson-Carver was the recipient of the Altoids Award and an exhibition at the New Museum. Since then, he has lived in several locations in the United States, Canada and Mexico and has been included in museum and gallery exhibitions in London, Madrid, Saskatchewan, and Montreal.

Opening Reception | Photogravures and Painted Wood: Lothar Osterburg / Sara Sosnowy

Lothar Osterburg makes photogravures of small, sculpted models of windmills, lighthouses, sailboats among others, staged in evocative settings. Built from memory of readily available materials, the models have a dreamlike quality which is enhanced by the placement of the camera within their world; the perspective is that of a person within the set, obscuring the actual size of the objects. Sara Sosnowy's paintings have evolved over the last decade or so from large minimalist color statements to smaller maximalist color statements. Her interest in abstraction has taken her into the realm of ornamentation and the decorative.

Known for roles on TV shows like Arrested Development and Mr. Show With Bob And David, as well as a successful stand-up routine full of sharp-tongued rants and rages, Cross has carved out his place in American comedy. Whether deflating the pomposity of religious figures, calling out the pathetic symbiosis of pseudo-celebrity and its leaching fandom, or merely pushing the buttons of the way-too-easily offended P.C. left or the caustic, double-standard of the callous (but funnier) right, Cross has something to say about everyone, including his own ridiculous self.

Screening | German Documentary: Jürgen Böttcher's The Wall (1990)

Böttcher and his cinematographer Thomas Plenert chronicle the various activities taking place along the former Berlin Wall in a phenomenological fashion, conscious of the fact that any commentary on events would shatter the power and uniqueness of these images at this point. The director’s artistic device transforms this monstrous structure, which cut through the center of Berlin and symbolized the Cold War for more than 25 years, into a canvas depicting its own history. 96 min. In German with English subtitles.

Concert | ITP Music Festival

Featuring the following acts: Joshua Berry studied jazz and blues but focused on composing in the Classical style before finding flamenco in Spain. In Sevilla he learned to play flamenco from Juan del Gastor, nephew of the great Diego del Gastor. Milena Mepris is a rock singer, songwriter, and guitarist from New York City who isn't afraid to put prettiness and humor back into rock and roll, with her soaring harmonies, driving bass lines and unique melodies. Her influences span from early Madonna to the grunge sounds of Nirvana, to the classic rock of The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, and Patti Smith. Source of Yellow is always trying to get lost – whether by wandering directionless into planes of color and overwhelming light, seeking out the blackest brambled swamps, or by burying themselves alive then frantically digging themselves out at the last conscious moment, gasping. LS & JC is a duo made up of JC Cassis, a dance–pop singer, songwriter and producer who has won Amateur Night at the Apollo, had a number one song on internet radio, and was a finalist in the 2008 International Songwriting Competition, and Lee–Sean, an avant–pop provocateur and a producer and co–founder of Hepnova Multimedia.
