Talk | Thirty Years Later: The Oklahoma City Bombing and Lessons Learned from the Response

The Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City was bombed on April 19, 1995, killing 167 people. In response, FEMA activated 11 Urban Search and Rescue teams from around the country, including New York Task Force 1. The 56-member task force was comprised of members of the FDNY, NYPD and EMS, nine of whom were later killed responding to the World Trade Center on 9/11. As we mark the 30th anniversary of the Oklahoma City bombing, Museum Director Clifford Chanin is joined by retired FDNY Battalion Chief Stephen Spall, retired EMS Chief of Department Charles Wells and retired NYPD ESU Detective Kenneth Winkler to discuss their response to both unprecedented attacks, the challenges faced in urban search and rescue operations, and the profound lessons learned that continue to shape emergency response today.

Classical Music | Deep Listening: Collaborative Meditation and Deep Listening for Earth Day

Juilliard Community Engagement Fellows lead a live performance inspired by the pioneering works of Pauline Oliveros. Through guided listening exercises and interactive musicmaking, participants are invited to explore a deeper connection to themselves, one another, and the natural world. Drawing on Oliveros’ signature deep listening practices, this participatory event offers a unique opportunity to cultivate presence, celebrate collective creativity, and honor Earth Day in an immersive performance experience. Deep listening is a term coined by American composer and artist Pauline Oliveros to distinguish between involuntary hearing and conscious listening. The works on this program invite us all, performers and audience alike, to become more aware of the soundscape: our sonic environment, from the physical world around us to the vibrant world inside all people. In the middle portion of the program, everyone is invited to participate in deep listening prompts that will be distributed. The awareness that these works set in motion enables the group to take a moment to cherish, wonder at, and more deeply understand the world, so that everyone may better take care of it and themselves.

Opening Reception | Scott Covert's "Eternal Party of the Passed" Gravestone Rubbing Art Exhibition: Another Dead Supreme

In his show, Another Dead Supreme, Scott Covert's subjects are either singular in focus or are groupings of topically related or entirely disconnected folks who share one common denominator: they now belong to the earth. His singular subjects either stoically state a name once or echo it many times over. In his composite canvases, Covert's subjects take on new lives and fraternize with lovers, peers, strangers, co-conspirators, and enemies in an eternal party of the passed. Since 1985, Covert has traveled around the world making gravestone rubbings on both canvas and paper in which he layers names and epitaphs into expressionistic compositions. His colorful arrangements frequently contain multiple individuals both famous and infamous, which he gathers from cemeteries in vastly disparate locations. This project is equal parts earnest homage, collection of celebrity ephemera, subversive performance art, and travel diary. To make his "Monument Paintings," Covert mounts canvas over tombstones before using wax oil crayon in a frottage technique to transfer names and epitaphs to its surface. These canvases are often built up over the course of years, sometimes decades, as Covert makes multiple trips in order to gather all of the rubbings he deems essential. Once back in his studio, he further adorns the canvas with oil paint and sometimes glitter. The exhibition will be open from April 18th through May 24th.

Lecture | Understanding the Look of Love in the Art of Van Gogh

Art historian Judy Sund provides an insightful lecture on Vincent van Gogh. Van Gogh was a routinely rejected suitor and often disappointed lover whose images of courting couples constitute an unexpected leitmotif in his oeuvre. Born of wistful reverie rather than lived experience, his images of romantic love recall Medieval love gardens, Flemish party scenes, and Rococo fêtes galantes, though the lovers Van Gogh depicted are his own working-class contemporaries, and some of them so closely resemble the artist as to suggest a degree of self-projection. Shaped by contemporary literature and avant-garde Parisian painting, Van Gogh’s updated takes on the traditional Garden of Love – some set in public parks, others in moonlit dreamscapes – are routinely enhanced by evocative color schemes that the artist deployed to expressive effect. Opposing hues, he explained, “make each other shine” when paired, and “complete each other like man and wife.” The motif of lovers, which Van Gogh deemed especially “poetic,” inspired him to step outside his usual reliance on direct observation and produce some of his most fanciful paintings.
