Concert | Banned Music with Internationally Acclaimed Pianist

This event is a Yom HaShoah commemoration performance with pianist Itay Goren. This lecture/recital features five composers of different nationalities whose music was banned by the Nazis: Pavel Haas, Erich Korngold, Luigi Dallapiccola, Darius Milhaud and Paul Hindemith. Mr. Goren will speak about the lives of the composers and perform selections from their works, demonstrating the wealth of ideas and variety of styles that existed in Europe of the early twentieth century, before the tragic events that followed the Nazi rise to power.  Mr. Goren’s playing is described as “an evocative journey from shimmering excitement to calm contemplation” (Classical New Jersey). Following his concerts in Germany in 2019 of Brahms’ Second Piano Concerto with the Tübingen Academic Orchestra, Schwäbisches Tagblatt wrote: “Most beautiful were his brilliantly glittering high figurations under the shelter of the big climactic orchestral tuttis, a turbulently urging Scherzo, a serenely melodious Andante, all inwardness, where the piano entry with its tones slowly rising from the depth, discovering itself in wonderment, held the 750 listeners spellbound.” As a collaborator with many ensembles and soloists, he appears often with the Madison String Quartet.

Book Discussion | Walking New York: Manhattan History on Foot

A presentation with Keith Taillon as he speaks about his newly published book with a special focus on our neighborhoods. His book explores his most popular walking tour routes, examining in depth the various neighborhoods of Manhattan, their history, and the intricacies of their formation. He traces the evolution of the Big Apple back to some of its early seeds, focusing on the 19th and 20th centuries--a window in which New York City transformed from a small provincial port town into a global metropolis. Keith covers everything from the completion of the Erie Canal and Croton Aqueduct to some of the notorious characters behind the city's Gilded Age. Each chapter of the book features a suggested walking route, with a detailed map and notes on the route's length and time. Throughout each walk, readers are encouraged to pause and absorb the streetscape. Filled with interesting facts and timelines, you will gain a comprehensive understanding of why the city looks and feels the way it does.

Opening Reception | Group Exhibition on Personal, Creative, and Migratory Journeys: Migratory Paths

This event celebrates Wondering Paths, a group exhibition of thesis work by the MFA Fine Arts graduates. Wondering Paths unfolds in a pivotal moment in American history, marked by an insurgent attack on artistic freedom, expression, and culture. The exhibition meanders through the personal, creative, and migratory journeys of 25 artists from eight countries and is loosely organized around four themes that intersect and blend into each other around the edges: Gendered Norms and Lived Experience Sense of Place and Site of Memory Knowledge, Self-Expression and Political Identity Artistic Exploration and Experimentation The featured works were developed in the years leading up to President Trump's second term and were first shown in the months following his return to office. These works reflect lived experiences and critical inquiries, often drawing on research and knowledge systems that are being challenged by federal policies. Confronting a rapidly changing cultural and political landscape, Wondering Paths demonstrates the persistent influence of art. As nationalism resurges and ideological conflicts intensify, the works in the exhibition affirm art's capacity to question, challenge and imagine new pathways.

Poetry Reading | Primordial: Poems of Collective Trauma

Mai Der Vang’s poetry—lyrically insistent and visually compelling—constitutes a groundbreaking investigation into the collective trauma and resilience experienced by Hmong people and communities, the ongoing cultural and environmental repercussions of the war in Vietnam, the lives of refugees afterward, and the postmemory carried by their descendants. Primordial is a crucial turn to the ecological and generational impact of violence, a powerful and rousing meditation on climate, origin, and fate. With profound and attentive care, Vang addresses the plight of the saola, an extremely rare and critically endangered animal native to the Annamite Mountains in Laos and Vietnam. The saola looks like an antelope, with two long horns, and is related to wild cattle, though the saola has been placed in a genus of its own. Remarkably, the saola has only been known to the outside world since 1992, and sightings are so rare that it has now been more than a decade since the last known image of one was captured in a camera trap photo in 2013. Primordial examines the saola’s relationship to Hmong refugee identity and cosmology and a shared sense of exile, precarity, privacy, and survival. Can a war-torn landscape and memory provide sanctuary, and what are the consequences for our climate, our origins, our ability to belong to a homeland? Written during a difficult pregnancy and postpartum period, Vang’s poems are urgent stays against extinction.

Book Discussion | Tahini Baby: Bright, Everyday Recipes That Happen to Be Vegetarian (in-person and online)

In Hindu legend, sesame seeds symbolize immortality. In ancient Egypt and Persia, they were ground into flour for bread. In today’s Middle East, they are almost synonymous with the ground paste routinely mixed into hummus, baba ghanoush and halva. For Eden Grinshpan, the host of Top Chef Canada and a popular social media entrepreneur, tahini is a staple that livens up everything from roasted cauliflower to eggplant schnitzel, strawberry rhubarb crumble to ice cream — and is healthy to boot! Upon the publication of her second cookbook, Tahini Baby, Grinshpan shares her playful approach to Middle Eastern and Mediterranean-inspired vegetarian dishes that count on tahini to liven up your cooking.

Poetry Reading | Water: Poems by Rumi with Haleh Liza Gafori and Maya C. Popa

Acclaimed poet Haleh Liza Gafori returns to discuss her latest translations of Rumi's lyric poetry in Water, with prize-winning poet Maya C. Popa. Water expands on Gold, Haleh Liza Gafori's inspired and widely praised translation of the lyric poetry of the Persian mystic Rumi. As in Gold, Gafori renders with fluid grace and moving immediacy these indisputable masterworks of world literature, drawing on the deep well of Rumi’s work to bring out the worldly wit and wisdom that accompany his otherworldly summons. Behold the divine within and without, he tells us. Question the gnawing hunger for material possessions, fame, and fortune, and the fear of emptiness that drives it. Muster the soul, and experience a more compassionate and liberated state of mind. An eco-poet before his time, Rumi celebrates the immensity and wonder of the natural world while warning us of the havoc that greed and the pursuit of power wreak upon us and our world. His flights of dazzling imagery open up heart-stopping glimpses of the divine, challenging readers to wake from oblivion, and above all, to surrender to the transformative power of Love. Gafori is an acclaimed vocalist and musician as well as a gifted linguist and poet, and in her translations Rumi's poetry sings and beckons as nowhere else. Hers is the work, as the poet Marilyn Hacker has said, "of someone who is at once an acute and enamored reader of the original Farsi text, a dedicated miner of context and backstory, and, best of all, a marvelous poet in English.” A 2024 MacDowell fellow, and recipient of a 2023 NYSCA grant, Gafori has created a musical and cross-media performance based on her translations and has presented her work via performances, lectures, and workshops, at institutions such as Lincoln Center, Stanford University, Le Poisson Rouge, the Academy of American Poets, Sarah Lawrence College, and Bradford Literary Fest.  Doors open 30 minutes before the event.

Classical Music | Here Speaks the Soul: A Program with the Viennese Oboe

An evening of enchanting chamber music, where the soulful voice of the oboe meets the expressive resonance of the piano. Oboist Sebastian Breit, soloist of the Vienna State Opera and the Vienna Philharmonic, and pianist Diana Fuchs, an award-winning Vienna-based musician, present a program exploring poetic and romantic soundscapes. Experience a captivating musical conversation between two distinct instruments -- Sebastian Breit (oboe) and Diana Fuchs (piano) bring together rich historical traditions and expressive modernity. The program highlights the poetic and emotional depth of chamber music, featuring Schumann's Romances, Britten's Metamorphoses after Ovid, and Beethoven's groundbreaking Pathetique Sonata. The duo explores the oboe's lyrical qualities alongside the piano's dynamic versatility, weaving through Romantic and contemporary compositions, from Heinz Holliger's Lied to Liszt's visionary Legends. The evening concludes with Kalliwoda's refined yet playful Salon Piece, leaving audiences with a smile. Concert | Dancers, Actors, and Musicians in a Multi-Genre Immersive Concert

Dancers, actors, and musicians from The Juilliard Green Club are thrilled to take the stage to present a multi-genre, immersive concert experience. They ask the audience to consider our collective futures in the face of climate change amidst differences in background, class, resources, and geographical location. Artists have always looked either to the past or forward to an unknown future, often attempting to predict what awaits all of us with the knowledge that they have in their time. This need to consider our place and agency within a larger context is one artists always struggle with; but today, it is something we all struggle with, as the choices necessary to guarantee a safe future are not in our hands. We will consider art that seeks out the past, present, and future of our Earth to answer the following question: how have artists considered their futures in the past, and what can we learn from them in imagining our own future?
