Discussion | The Health Care Reforms of 2010: A Transformed Health Insurance Landscape

Tuesday, June 1, 2010, 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm

Free

The recently adopted health care law is arguably the most consequential piece of social legislation enacted in this country in 40 years. For the insurance industry, the law is even more transformative. Although political passions surrounding the legislation have cooled in the 10 weeks since the President signed it into law, the commercial and legal complexities to be faced by participants in the health care and insurance sectors are only beginning.

The first hour will feature a panel of experienced lawyers practicing in the fields of health care law and insurance regulation as well as a senior-ranking insurance regulator, who will place the new law in a broader context. The panelists will identify challenges for policymakers, regulators and the numerous industry stakeholders navigating the law’s wide-ranging implications. These include new regulatory mandates that will likely upend current business models. Our panelists will also focus on items of interest to employers, new market conduct restrictions on insurers, the insurance “Exchanges” that are to begin operating by 2014, upcoming regulation to implement the law and other critical dynamics produced by the legislation.

The second hour brings together three distinguished figures from the world of government, politics and regulation now serving in the private sector or in health care advocacy. Their unique perspectives on the health care law are the result of years in the trenches on insurance issues. Their views on the intersection of patient rights and public oversight and resources are sure to make this an unforgettable evening.

Panelists, First Hour:
Vanessa Scott, Sutherland. Asbill & Brennan LLP
Wendy Goldstein, Epstein Becker & Green LLP
John Powell, New York State Insurance Dept.
Dan Rabinowitz, Sullivan & Cromwell LLP
Featured Speakers, Second Hour:
Former New York Lt. Gov. Betsy McCaughey, health care advocate
Former New York Insurance Superintendent Howard Mills, Deloitte
Former Illinois Insurance Director Nat Shapo, Katten Muchin Rosenman LLP, Chicago
