Discussion | Germans in America: Untold Stories

Thursday, June 15, 2023, 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm

Free

Helmut Fischer, Mary Lea Enderle, and Thomas Enderle will discuss three largely untold stories of early German immigrants in this country. The first story is an overview of Kleindeutschland (Little Germany), which used to occupy what's now known as the East Village and the Lower East Side. Story two is the rags-to-riches journey by Pieter Claesen Wyckoff in 1637 from a farmhouse in East Frisia (northwestern region of Germany) to a farm of his own in New Amsterdam -- now a museum in Brooklyn. The last story is about the exodus of East Frisians in the mid-1800s to the Midwest, in search of farms of their own.

About the Speakers
Helmut Fischer is a local historian and teacher in Norden, Germany. He is the president of the Upstalsboom Society, which has connected many Midwestern Americans to their German roots in East Frisia.

Mary Lea Enderle has worked in creative roles at higher educational institutions, most recently for Columbia University. She is half German American and has resided in the East Village for nearly 20 years.

Thomas Enderle was born in Japan to German parents. Trained as a lawyer, he worked for three decades in Hamburg, Germany as a director and board member of an international company. He is thrilled to now be living in what was once known as Kleindeutschland.
