Discussion | "Dancer of the Century" Choreographer Martha Graham in Cuba

Discussions, September 12, 2024, 09/12/2024, "Dancer of the Century" Choreographer Martha Graham in Cuba

Thursday, September 12, 2024, 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm

$1 min donation, registration required

TIME magazine named Martha Graham "Dancer of the Century," and People magazine named her among the female "Icons of the Century." As a choreographer, she was as prolific as she was complex. Graham created 181 ballets and a dance technique that has been compared to ballet in its scope and magnitude. The Graham technique reshaped American dance and is still taught worldwide.

In 1941, Martha Graham and her company set sail for Cuba. In the audience for one of the company's performances was a very young man whose father pressed him to become a lawyer-though he harbored dreams of being a dancer. That young man, Ramiro Guerra Suarez, eventually studied under Martha Graham, spending several years taking classes with her and her company. His subsequent early works created in Cuba, Mulato y mamb?, and Suite Yoruba, clearly reflect her influences.

On the cusp of the 1959 Cuban Revolution which resulted in barriers between Cuba and the US, Ramiro founded the Modern Dance Department of the National Theater of Cuba and the National Modern Dance Ensemble (now Contemporary Dance of Cuba). He also formed a fruitful partnership with a young, talented performer, Marianela Boan who, with Ramiro's encouragement and guidance, would go on to a remarkably rich career as a boundary-pushing choreographer drawing from diverse dance and theater tradition while incorporating traces of Graham, technically and very much in terms of spirit.

As political doors closed and Cuba became isolated, the Graham seeds collected by Ramiro during years of in-person study with her in New York, were planted on the island and took root continuing to flourish in the innovative work of Marianela Boan.

In this dynamic discussion about how Graham, Ramiro, and Bo?n ignited modern dance in Cuba, Eduardo Vilaro (Artistic Director of Ballet Hisp?nico) moderates a conversation with Marianela Bo?n, Janet Eilber (Artistic Director of the Martha Graham Dance Company), and Cynthia Newport.
